Far Too Quiet on this forum ..............! :d:d

Please could someone see if they can find deaths for:
Stephen Pettitt born 1861 and Elizabeth Pettitt born 1860 in the US. (They were both born in England!)
Last seen in 1900 in Niagara, New York.
Can't find them in 1910 and their younger children seem to have been farmed out to another family.

Also a marriage between Edward Stephen Henry Pettit born 1882 and Dora Joyce would be great too. They are married and living in Niagara in 1910 (Dora being 19, so presumably they hadn't long been married).

I've searched FMP but can't find them there.
PS The "t"s in Pettitt are extremely variable! ;)

I don't have any world subs, but a tree on Ancestry has him dying in 1904 and Elizabeth in 1942. Elizabeth's death says Niagara Falls, Niagara, New York, but James' doesn't state a place. Neither have a source.

The same tree has the son, Edward Stephen marrying Dora '1906+' and then divorcing before he married Lily Gillis 2 Sept 1912 and a third marriage to Alice Barber-Caughell on 29 Aug 1934. Both 2nd and 3rd marriage in Niagara County.

There are lots of US BMD's which aren't online, but I will have a look.

Find a Grave has an entry for Stephen J Pettitt 1862-1904, buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, with a headstone photo:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/63877661#

I tried to search for Elizabeth on there but I got a "bad gateway" error message.

Ah, this public ancestry tree has Elizabeth remarrying to a William Stewart, with various census links:

The 1942 Niagara Falls city directory has "Stewart Elizabeth wid Wm died Jan 20 1942".

And the New York Death Index for 1942 has Stewart, Elizabeth, Niag Falls, 20th Jan, age has been transcribed as 70 by ancestry but it is very faint and hard to make out - could easily say 79.

1940 US census, Elizabeth Stewart is age 75, born England, and has daughters Maude 46, born England, and Ida (should be Ada, according to that tree I linked to earlier), 44, born New York, with her in Niagara Falls:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/2442/m-t0627-02697-00841/8342993?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3d1940usfedcen%26gss%3dsfs28_ms _db%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26msT%3d1%26MS_AdvCB%3d1% 26gsfn%3deli*%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln%3dst*w*t*%26gsln _x%3d1%26msbdy%3d1860%26msbdy_x%3d1%26msbdp%3d10%2 6gskw%3dniagara%26gskw_x%3d1%26MSAV%3d2%26uidh%3dv m5&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

The daughters are down as Stewart but presumably should be Pettitts.

Thank you! That is brilliant! The younger kids in 1910 are with a Stuart family as "step children". I was mystified by that as the wife was called Mary! lol

Thank you ever so! Most progress with this lot for a year! :):)

You're on my home territory, you know, Terri! I looked around quite a bit and couldn't find anything for you, I'm afraid. It's tantalizing, though, as some of our best old friends here have Pettit ancestors. Will keep my eyes open and let you know if I stumble across anything. Good luck!

Not sure if these are yours, but there is a legal proceeding that Ancestry has transcribed with an "inferred death year" of 1900 for an Edward S. Pettit. In fact the document dated 27 March 1900 is a petition for guardianship of Edward, an "infant" aged 14 and upwards, to be granted to Elizabeth Pettit of Niagara Falls. If your Edward Stephen Henry Pettit was born in 1882, he would still have been a minor of about 18 years in 1900, so this might fit.

They're both recorded on that 1910 census as being married 5 years. Her father Abe Joyce is living with them. Do you currently have Ancestry to see the image?

Okay, it's true. Dora is on the 1900 census aged 9, born August 1890. (The census was taken in June.) They're farming over in Yates County, written up as Joice.

Well, I don't know if you're going to find a legal marriage to Edward Pettit or not. Here she is in 1913 having skipped across the border to Canada and on 21 November 1913 she’s age 24, spinster, marrying Claud M. Wheeler.

Dora May Joyce - Claud M Wheeler (https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7921/ONMS932_274-0924?pid=1121159&backurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fsse.dll%3Fdb%3DOntarioMarr1858-1899_ga%26h%3D1121159%26indiv%3Dtry%26o_cvc%3DImag e%3AOtherRecord%26rhSource%3D60525&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usepub=true&usepubjs=true&bm=true)

Ancestry also has the Find A Grave index for her. She is buried back home where she came from in Yates County, NY.

Dora May Wheeler (https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=60525&h=49764174&ssrc=pt&tid=42471410&pid=28889784204&usePUB=true)

Hi Janet, thanks so much for all that information

I found Edward and Dora on FMP in 1910. It didn't say how long she had been married.
She was 19 then, so she married at 14??? Blimey ..........!

I have a WW1 record for Edward dated 1918 and his next of kin is Lilian, no relationship named but presumably a wife.
