View Full Version : Loose - possibly wrong -ends
Just browsing through my tree I have husband of a gt gt aunt, JOHN WILLIAM EVANS. The aunt, EMILY ESTHER SMOOTHY, was his 2nd wife.
I have his first marriage as to a MARTHA ELIZA EVANS (no idea if they are related) in 1877 in Whitechapel, but I can't find a source or reference to it. They also appear to have only had one child FRANK ALBERT EVANS born 1885 in Richmond, Surrey. He grew up to marry Emily's niece, Alice Vine.
It just struck me as odd that if John and Martha married in 1877 they should only have had one child and I also can't find a baptism for Frank.
Any ideas?
The GRO index has several other Evans with mmn Evans in Richmond which might fit?

When did he marry Emily?
There are five children in their household in 1891:

Assuming it's the right Frank A.
The eldest child on that 1891 census was Max Charles Evans, born Dec 1880 Bedford dist.
Thank you Lindsay, Merry and Carolyn (Hi Cuz!)
The 1891 family is right, but I see the wife is recorded as Eliza so I'm off to see if I can find a marriage with that name first.
Found the marriage in the index:
Martha Eliza Evans
Registration Year: 1877
Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration district: Whitechapel
Volume: 1c
Page: 760
But I can't find the cert on the London Parishes database so it might have been a civil marriage or non-conformist.
