Could someone please be kind enough to help me with the baptism of John

Birch sometime around 1791/2? Parents were James Birch, tailor, & Harriet.

I know John had a sister Harriet Jnr b 1788, & a brother William Henry b abt

1790. Harriet Snr died in 1792 & I don't believe James remarried.

John's birthplace would most likely have been Hillingdon/Uxbridge area but

may possibly have been London where his parents married in 1787.

Do you need siblings?

Thanks so much Merry. Are there any siblings other than Harriet Jnr & William Henry?

These are the unexpanded results for the other children of James and Harriet:

Harriot Birch Baptism 28 Feb 1788 Chalfont St Peters, Buckinghamshire, England James, Harriot

William Henry Birch 1790 Baptism 22 Aug 1790 Uxbridge, Middlesex, England James, Harriot

Ann Birch 1791 Baptism 25 Sep 1791 Uxbridge, Middlesex, England James, Harriott

I'll add in the dates of birth in a minute....

EDIT Harriot's entry doesn't have a dob but does give their residence as Hillingdon.

William Henry dob 6 Jun 1790
Ann dob 16 Aug 1791

The three later children all have residence Uxbridge at baptism.

Anne Birch Burial 6 Nov 1791 St John the Baptist, Hillingdon, Middlesex James, Harriott

Ann's burial gives James' occupation - tayler (sic)

Thanks again Merry. Interesting to see the 'Independent' mention as James & Harriet

had married at St. Giles, Cripplegate.

Unless you were a Quaker or a Jew the only option for marriage was C of E until non-con and civil marriages became legal in 1837.

I do remember now - you said that before. (Must pay more attention)

Its just that Harriet's sister Sarah (she who marries Isaac Headland & then disappears

along with him after 1800) had children who used the Independent church & every

time it crops up I find myself hoping it might lead somewhere.

Only the C of E could perform legal marriages then so nonconformists had to marry c o e although I have hearsay evidence that they married in the vestry, not at the altar!

I don't believe James remarried.

Are you sure?

I saw this marriage:

St Botolph, Aldersgate
17 Nov 1794
James Birch, widower
Darcos (sic) Chamberlaine, spinster, both otp
James signed, Dorcas made her mark
witnesses Ann Ingle and Sarah Round

Then a bit of a gap, followed by:

Charles Birch Baptism 26 Mar 1800 St Margaret, Uxbridge, Middlesex James, Dorcas

Elizabeth Birch Baptism 17 Oct 1800 St Margaret, Uxbridge, Middlesex James, Dorcas

Thomas Birch Baptism 4 May 1806 St John the Baptist, Hillingdon, Middlesex James, Dorcas

Charlotte Birch Baptism 15 Jul 1807 St Margaret, Uxbridge, Middlesex James, Dorcas

Most of these have no occ for the father, but the entry for Thomas Birch says occ tailor.

No Merry, not at all sure & obviously wrong! I hadn't investigated James's later life, except

when he crops up assisting his sons John & William Henry who acted as Headborough &

Constable of the Uxbridge/Hillingdon area.

This may be that Dorcas:

Death Registration
BIRCH, DORCAS aged 81
GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in SAINT SAVIOUR SURREY Volume 04 Page 948

Do you know when/where James died?

Merry

The 1841 census doesn't really help. I think this may well be the Dorcas who died in 1849, but nothing to prove she is James's wife/widow here

Her name has been transcribed as Pinck! (about 1/2 way down left page)

No, I haven't investigated James much at all.

Merry

lol I just found this on another thread on here:

James Birch
b abt 1740
bur 13 Jun 1834
St Margaret, Uxbridge
Hillingdon

Merry

James Birch's signatures on the 1787 and 1794 marriages look pretty similar :)

Merry

lol I just found this on another thread on here:

James Birch
b abt 1740
bur 13 Jun 1834
St Margaret, Uxbridge
Hillingdon

Actually, I think this burial says 74 years, not 94, which would make him much closer to the ages of his brides.

Merry

Here's a possible baptism for James:

James Birch Baptism 1 May 1763 St Margaret, Uxbridge, Middlesex Henry, Eliz

There's no occ for Henry on that baptism, but there is this burial:

Henry Birch Burial 30 Nov 1788 St John the Baptist, Hillingdon, Middlesex

which says the dec'd was a tailor, so same occ as your James.

Thanks again, Merry. Yes,74 seems more likely & it looks as if his father was Henry.

The tailoring went through the generations & daughter Harriet married her cousin William

Headland who was another tailor.
