Hi all,

I'm looking for a girl named Emily Cottis on the 1901 & 1911 census returns. According to her death registration, she was born 14/09/1897. I think I've found the rest of her family in 1901 and 1911, but she isn't with them, nor can I find her birth registration in the same area/date as it ought to be.

The issue is that I am not sure whether I am looking for another girl called Emily, or if in fact it is a girl named Charlotte Emily who lied about her age when she got married... or if I'm totally wrong and it's someone else altogether.

If you search Cottis/Kent births 1887 - 1900 you get her (apparent) siblings:

Mary Elizabeth
Annie
Charlotte Emily
Henry William
Daisy
Alice
William
Martha Kezia
Maud
Arthur

Charlotte Emily was born Q2 1889 and is here in 1891 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1891&indiv=try&h=13064326), 1901 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=whH1309&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-g&new=1&rank=1&gsln=Cottis&gsln_x=0&msbpn__ftp=Swanscombe,%20Kent,%20England&msbpn=84718&msbpn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C0%7C3257%7C3251%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C5270%7C84718% 7C0%7C0%7C&msbpn_x=1&msbpn__ftp_x=1&cp=0&catbucket=r&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=9633236&dbid=7814&indiv=1&ml_rpos=8) and 1911 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=whH1309&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-g&new=1&rank=1&gsln=Cottis&gsln_x=0&msbpn__ftp=Swanscombe,%20Kent,%20England&msbpn=84718&msbpn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C0%7C3257%7C3251%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C5270%7C84718% 7C0%7C0%7C&msbpn_x=1&msbpn__ftp_x=1&cp=0&catbucket=r&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=53150812&dbid=2352&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1). That she appears to be going by Emily in 1911 is interesting, as is the fact she's working in Essex, because the Emily Cottis I am looking for married Ambrose Ling in West Ham in 1923 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8753&h=61007241&ssrc=pt&tid=84798276&pid=42507747386&usePUB=true). This is what connects the dots for me, and makes me wonder whether Charlotte Emily is the same Emily.

She died as Emily Ling in Lincoln in 1987 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=7579&h=7061230&ssrc=pt&tid=84798276&pid=42507747386&usePUB=true).

There is an Emily Alice Cottis born Q1 1898 Orsett, Essex whom I've found on census records, but I've discounted her - I think? - because she married a Charles W Ridgewell in Orsett in 1921 (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=whH1311&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-g&new=1&rank=1&gsfn=Emily%20A&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Cottis&gsln_x=0&msbpn__ftp=Grays,%20Essex&cp=0&catbucket=r&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=67129095&dbid=8753&indiv=1&ml_rpos=6). Her death is here (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=whH1317&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&gsfn=Emily%20Alice&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Ridgewell&gsln_x=0&msbdy=1898&msbpn__ftp=Swanscombe,%20Kent,%20England&msbpn=84718&msbpn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C0%7C3257%7C3251%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C5270%7C84718% 7C0%7C0%7C&cp=0&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=34&h=7300266&dbid=7579&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1).

Any thoughts? The only Emily Cottis I can find on GRO during the right period is the above girl from Orsett, but it isn't her. I suppose it's possible that Ambrose's wife was a widow, or born abroad...

Could be Collis not Cottis. The birth of their son in 1926 (from 1939 Register) has mmn Collis. Then this could be her:

Births Dec 1897
Collis Emily W. Ham 4a 190

Haha, oh lord, so that means I'm missing the son as well. Thanks, Merry! :D

I'm also looking for James Greener (b. 1858, Chertsey) in 1901. I can't find him in 1881 either, but I think that's because he was likely in the Army at that time.

In 1901 he should be with his wife, Esther, who is here (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=whH1367&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-g&new=1&rank=1&gsfn=Esther&gsfn_x=0&msbdy=1850&msbpn__ftp=Headley,%20Hampshire,%20England&msbpn=84065&msbpn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C0%7C3257%7C3251%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C5266%7C84065% 7C0%7C0%7C&msrpn__ftp=Chertsey,%20Surrey,%20England&msrpn=87707&msrpn_PInfo=8-%7C0%7C0%7C3257%7C3251%7C0%7C0%7C0%7C5286%7C87707% 7C0%7C0%7C&cp=0&catbucket=r&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=4520362&dbid=7814&indiv=1&ml_rpos=2).

In 1911 he's with his second wife here (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2352&h=41508150&ssrc=pt&tid=84918040&pid=240122762280&usePUB=true).

There are two army records on FMP for James, one dated 1876 and the other 1900. I had already opened them before, so I don't know if there is anything on any thread here already?

On a prior thread, possibly. If he was with them in 1900 as well then that explains it.

Edit: Okay, that's that then!
