View Full Version : Ann Tanner
marries Maurice Murphy in 1829.
Their children include
Walter
Cherry (Charity)
and Ann Patience.
Ann sometimes says she is born in Rotherhithe, sometimes Ireland.
Now I have found this family in 1841 Rotherhithe:
Walter Tanner Male 78 1763 Ireland
Cherry Tanner Female 70 1771 Ireland
Patience Tanner Female 40 1801 Ireland
Benjamin Tanner Male 26 1815 Ireland
Patience dies in 1850 and I lose Benjamin after his marriage in the 1840s.
Can anyone find this family in Ireland?
This is Charity's burial, but I can't see her in 1851:

The address matches her burial address.
I lose Benjamin after his marriage in the 1840s.
1861:

What's the chances the 1851 Stanley/Standley family are relatives? Similar children's names. They are Handley in 1841 but baps for children are mostly Stanley (St Mary's Rotherhithe).
I don't know if this helps (doubtful!), but the 2 year old nephew in the Stanley household in 1851 is James Edward King mmn Carroll. I found him with his parents, James and Elizabeth King in 1861 and confirmed the mmn with other siblings showing there.
The marriage of James and Elizabeth was in 1840 at St Nicholas Deptford. Father's names James King and Morris Carroll. Seems more likely the Carroll side might be connected to the Stanley family, but got no further. The Stanley and Tanner families both had children born after 1837, but none seem to have been registered.
From FMP:
Ireland Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds indexes 1623-1866 Transcription
First name(s) Walter
Last name Tanner
Year 1790
Diocese Cork and Ross
Spouse's first name(s) Charity
Spouse's last name Grainger
Record set Ireland Diocesan And Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds Indexes 1623-1866
In the same database I found this which may or may not be connected:
First name(s) Elizabeth
Last name Tanner
Year 1790
Diocese Cork and Ross
Spouse's first name(s) Henry
Spouse's last name Stanly
Having seen the above Tanner/Grainger transcription I was bothered by this - same entry (??) different year, on ancestry (Irish Records Extraction database)
Name: Walter Tanner
Sex: Male
Marriage: 1700
Marriage Place: Diocese of Cork & Ross, County Cork, Ireland
Spouse: Charity Grainger
Source: Albert Eugene Casey, Eleanor L. Downey-Prince, and Ursula Dietrich.. Index of O'Kief, Coshe Mange, Slieve Lougher and Upper Blackwater in Ireland. 16 vols. Birmingham, Alabama: Knocknagree Historical Fund, 1952-1971. See....
EDIT the Tanner/Stanly marriage shows up in the same ancestry database, but the year for that one is 1790, so hopefully 1700 is a mis-transcription.
I'm not too familiar with how common various forenames were in Ireland in the late 1700s, but I typed the name Tanner in the ancestry Irish Records Extraction database and saw quite a few of those London Tanner forenames appearing, marrying 1770-1800 approx. I wouldn't have thought the names Jonathan and Benjamin would be particularly commonplace. Could be relatives of Walter.
My word. you've been busy! Thank you. Lots to be thinking of there. And Benjamin has a daughter Ester, like Ann. Wow!
Oooh, in 1851 Benjamin says he is from Cork:

This is spooky, as Elizabeth Patience Murphy marries James King, son of James King in 1876. I think this is coincidence.
Hmm possibly James King is son of James, and Elizabeth Mahala Greely.
Is that the James whose father was a carman rather than James Edward whose father was a blacksmith?
