When Esther Murphy - daughter of Maurice and Ann - was baptised 20th February 1831

her sponsors were her uncle Jeremiah Murphy and Patience Tyrrell.

Now I think that Patience was born Patience Mary Rawbone, a baker's daughter from Islip, Oxfordshire. She married William Tyrell in 1826:

He was a cook and they had at least one son, William.

This is Patience in 1861:

I cannot see any family connection with the Murphys. Can anyone explain why someone baptised in the Church of England with a child also baptised in the Cof E should be a Roman Catholic sponsor?

And can anyone spot her in 1841?

That happened in Downton Abbey! :D

I seem to remember a discussion of this regarding some book or drama, can't think exactly what just now, and they said it was ok if not all the godparents were Catholics as long as at least one was.

It all seems very odd to me!

The name is so unusual, that I can find her in censuses (not 1841) and both Maurice and Jeremiah gave one of their daughters Patience as a middle name, which argues continuing friendship, if not a family relationship. But I am blowed if I can spot it.

William and Patience also had a daughter Mary Susannah, baptised 2 May 1827 St John the Baptist, Croydon. This is her in 1851, at Cowley, Oxfordshire, with a Rawbone family:

Whoo!

She is hideously mistranscribed in the Surrey indexes, but marries as Mary Susan Patience!

Only one godparent needs to be a confirmed Catholic at a Catholic baptism.
