Following on from my Richard Eastwood thread - Richard married Hannah Clarke and her parents are Ralph and Lucy nee Barratt. Can someone please read this and tell me if you agree with my thoughts?
All the following information comes from FMP:
Ralph Clarke died 1816, was buried at St Peter Ad Vincula Stoke on Trent, aged 44. Ralph Clarke burial (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2fstoke-on-trent-st-peter-burials-d1188-11-1813-1823%2f00091&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbur2%2f230642&highlights=%22%22)
(This is also where Hannah was baptised, Ralph and Lucy married)
This makes his DOB about 1772. There is a baptism for a Ralph in 1772 at St John Burslem, parents Phillip and Ann. Ralph - Phillip and Ann (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007566311%2f00148&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbap%2f279551&highlights=%22%22)
The only other baptism is in 1779, parents Philip and Jane, also at St John Burslem. Ralph - Philip and Jane (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007566311%2f00165&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbap%2f280530&highlights=%22%22)
I feel that the first baptism is the right one.
So following on from the baptism I searched for other children to Phillip and Ann. There are 13 between 1750 - 1788, all born at Burslem St John:
Mary 1750, Thomas 1752, William 1767, Thomas 1769, Ralph 1772, Helen 1776, Mary 1778, Sarah 1780, Elizabeth 1781, Betty 1782, James and Obadiah 1785, Phillip 1788.
I had thought they were all born to the same parents but am now not sure due to the 15 year gap between Thomas and William.
Moving on to possible marriages of Phillip and Ann, there are none before 1750.
There are banns in 1765 wife Ann Harrison Ann Harrison (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2fstoke-on-trent-st-peter-marriages--d1188-9-1754-1796%2f00112&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbanns2%2f071925%2f1&highlights=%22%22)
marriage in 1783 at Burslem St John to Ann Cartiledge, widow, Phillip is a Victualler
Ann Cartiledge (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007566311%2f01546&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fmar%2f43888%2f1&highlights=%22%22)
I liked this one as it is the same church but am not sure as there is a will for a Phillip whose will was probated in 1785 and he is a victualler but from Longport, which is not too far from Burslem. There seems to be no burial for this Phillip but he is not mine as he only has 2 minor children, neither of them called Ralph. But the will does not mean that the marriage is not mine as there could be 2 victuallers.
1785 Ann Sheldon at Audley St James the Great Ann Sheldon (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007566314%2f00321&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fmar%2f52140%2f1&highlights=%22%22)
I'm confused now, I don't know what my feelings are about the marriages. Any opinions?
As an aside :
Ann Clarke (wife of Phillip) died 1782 Burselm St John Ann Clarke (http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fstaff%2f007566311%2f00286&parentid=gbprs%2fstaff%2fbur%2f121119&highlights=%22%22)
I'm sorry for the essay. At least I didn't look at Lucy Barratt.
