Many thanks Merry, just found the marriage announcement in the newspapers for Page to Augusta. Now hunting the story of Thomas and his fatal fall from a horse.
The brother or the father?
This date matches the one on the probate:
01 September 1876 - Stamford Mercury
At Langford, the 28th ult., from accident, Mr. Thomas Blagg, farmer, aged 74
Did you know Francis Blagg b abt 1808 at Car Colston (brother of Thomas??) also died from a horse-related injury?
C&P from Rootsweb:
Burial South Leverton
16-3-1860 Francis Blagg age 51 notes Chas. S Burnaby Coroner 13-3-1860
The Nottingham Guardian thurs March 22nd 1860
Fatal Accident to surgeon
Francis Blagg surgeon of South Leverton--his father and grandfather both in the same trade, both died accidently, the former drowned in the Trent and the latter died from taking snuff without washing his hands after a surgical procedure...
Francis seems to have been on a pub crawl on horseback, he was known to ride too fast, it appears he collided with a gate post and died instantly, the coroners verdict was accidently killed by fall from a horse.
I didn't know there were two of them, Grace (mother of Page) is one of my Goulson family, a number of whom were surgeons and apothecaries which is how they probably became acquainted. Ironically one of the Goulson chaps also died on horseback, well more through striking his head when he fell off one after a suspected heart attack, (him not the horse).
I'm sure serious horseback accidents must have been pretty common. I just wondered if the accident of one brother had been transferred to the other (if they were brothers!), but perhaps not, as the newspaper suggests Thomas died through some sort of accident.
Sadly the Thorold society, who have gathered and stored a lot of Nottinghamshire pedigrees have a lot of stuff for the Blaggs available and a lot of stuff for the Goulsons which isn't :( There are plaques to the Blagg family in Car Colston church and they were connected to the Manor House for many years.
and the latter died from taking snuff without washing his hands after a surgical procedure...
I wonder if that's where the phrase "he snuffed it" came from?
No, I think it's from snuffing a candle!
That's it, dash my dreams of family history stardom why don't you?
