Ellen Strotton was born Midhurst, Jun qtr 1898 and is here in 1901, as daughter of Elizabeth aged 53 in Treyford, West Sussex:

By 1911, Edith Strotton (a genuine daughter of Elizabeth) has married Thomas Combes. She says she has been married 8 years(true) and has 5 living children of the marriage.

Edith has 5 children with her, two over 8 years old.

Alice and Ivy were both born in Treyford and appear on the GRO site as illegitimate Strottons. (Probably not Thomas's)

So Alice, who was alive in 1901 was patently NOT a daughter of Elizabeth (as shown on that census).

But where is Ellen? I cannot find her birth on the GRO site, nor as yet a marriage or death.

I didn't think of it either - just selected 'Phonetically Similar Variations' :)

The free 1939 Register search on FMP has an Ellen Strotten born 1899 living in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Birth month is May. It isn't showing me the names of anyone else in the household.

In 1911 Elizabeth says she has had 14 children, 9 living, 5 died, if that is any help.

That one is a resident in this institution:

Her dob is May 20th, but the year is extremely difficult to be sure of as there is Sellotape over it. Looks like 1891 possibly?

She is in an institution in the same area in 1911, but no place of birth given. Year of birth is 1899, so I guess that should be what it says in 1939 and I need new glasses?

Can you post a link to the 1911 entry, please, Merry? I can't find it.
Edit - never mind, found it now. I was putting 1899 in the year of birth but ancestry wants 1900.

She is in the Mary Dendy home, b 20 May 1899. Most of the inmates have no occupation, though some subsequently marry

I think that has got to be her, as there don't seem to be any births outside the Sussex area for Strottons.

But that is such a long way for a little girl to go. The 1911 institution is a home for epilectics.

I thought it was the Incorporated Lancashire and Cheshire Society for the Permanent Care of the Feebleminded?

Cheshire BMD has the death of Ellen Lillie Strotten 1989 Macclesfield, no age shown.
Edit - ancestry gives the dob for that death as 20 May 1899.

Oh, her estate is unclaimed.

It says place of birth Chester but who knows where they got that from?

Manchester Education Authority Schools for Epilectic Children - 1911

Incorporated Lancashire and Cheshire Society for the Permanent Care of the Feebleminded changed its name to the Mary Dendy homes in 1933

Just wondering whether you saw posts #15 and #16, Phoenix?

Sorry, Kite, have no home internet to respond. This is best mate's family. She's hoping to do some research in Chichester this week, so what you have found out has tidied up lots of loose ends and hopefully saved her some time for useful investigations.
