This is the Protestation Oath for Wiltshire:

The link should open at the page for South Newton on page 22.

The Hornes are in the parish in 1700. The registers are sparse before that date, but there are references in the 1600s.

Two pcc wills for South Newton have a John Horne (smith, of Stowford) as overseer or witness.

They span the period 1642, so a Horne should be there. Anyone spot him? Or was he hiding? I know the Hornes were recusants - but probably nonconformist, rather than Catholic.

What about the fourth name in the Stowford section on page 23? Looks like John Holne or something?

It looks like the only possibility, Kite. Thanks for looking. Really irritating that the names I have no interest in are beautifully distinct, but that has an irritating flourish over what ought to be an r.
However, given that there are absolutely no other Hornes in the villages (and three separate families by 1700) it does increase the likelihood of a friend being a cousin as well.
