This couple married in 1844. They lived in and around Salisbury until she was banged up in Millbank in the late 1860s. They moved away from the area, probably on her release.
I found an account in the British Newspaper Archive of them rowing and him beating her up. The judge or magistrate remarked that there were certain occasions when a man was justified in beating his wife, and her habit of drinking, spending all the money etc were mitigating circumstances.
Can I find the article again? No chance.
I've searched under Gigant Street - their usual address - Salisbury - wife beating etc.
I don't think Maria is mentioned by name.
I think this must be a Salisbury newspaper, probably between 1851 and 1869, but it's defeating me.
