Please can someone help me with finding this place in Yorks? It's in line two of this marriage entry:

"Benjamin Waddington of ????????? in Yorkshire, Farmer.....".

It doesn't seem difficult to read, but googling is getting me nowhere!

Sweetless??

Never heard of it

It looks like "Sweetcliff", but I wonder if it is supposed to be "Swarcliffe"?

Genuki doesn't have anything for Sweetcliff.

It says Sweetliff but I haven't figured out where that is yet.

I'm thinking ff should be ss but it is fs that is ss in the old English, isn't it?

I can't see the c for cliff though.

Maybe this?

There is no c but names like that often had variants with and without the c.

Aah! I have found Benjamin Waddington of Bracewell:

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fyorkshire%2f007587896%2f00517&parentid=gbprs%2fyorkshire%2fmar%2f201002415%2f1&highlights=%22%22

This is a 1733 marriage. There is also a baptism higher up.

This is tantalizing, but of no use just yet!

http://www.british-towns.net/

Not that it helps here but I found this website which might be useful when trying to determine other places.

So, if it's trying to say Staincliff(e) then he may well be the Bracewell Waddington. I had already found a bap for their son William somewhere (:o) who might be the groom at the marriage in post 1.

But is it trying to say Staincliff? There don't seem to be any other children of Ben and Mary who were Quakers. :(

Perhaps it's the name of his farm not the name of a parish?

There is a will on FMP for someone who lives at "Sweetlives Bracewell"

It could be Merry, it fits in with Sweetcliffe House in Bracewell Kite found.

It is Sweatlives, which doesn't sound as nice as Sweetlives, unless you can see the original. I can only see a transcript.

You mean Sweet(c)liff(e), not Staincliff(e), don't you, Merry?

Sweetcliffe House (http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/155615)

It's a nice looking house and the picture says it is a farm.

Hi
I've read this thread with interest as I'm actually researching the couple in that marriage record!
I'm now looking at William Waddington's parents and siblings. From Bishops transcripts of Bracewell parish on FMP:
His parents Benjamin Waddington and Mary Shutt were married in Bracewell, Yorkshire in 1733 and I've found baptisms for 7 children in Bracewell.
http://search.findmypast.com.au/record?id=gbprs%2fyorkshire%2fmar%2f201002415%2f1

I have 2 questions
Is Mary's surname Shutt, Shrett, or something else?
What is the name of the place they are recorded as living at during all the baptisms - Stock, Stocke? and where or what is it? Maybe a farm or hamlet in Bracewell parish?
http://search.findmypast.com.au/record?id=gbprs%2fyorkshire%2fbap%2f203952982

Thanks in advance
Sharon

It looks like Shutt to me.

And Stock was a township in Bracewell parish:
http://dp.genuki.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Bracewell

Stocke would just be a variant spelling.

Thanks. I've found Stock on a map now. Tiny place.
