I have two records for the same man in the New South Wales, Australia Unassisted passengers lists and in both of them the column headed "Station" is a very bad scrawl. Would someone have a look and tell me what they think it might be, please.

We're looking at A. Cant aged 22. In the first record he is 4th from the bottom.

and in the second he is about two thirds down the page - I think this says either "1 Grade" or "2 Grade" whatever that means! Ideas also welcome.

Station = 2nd Engineer possibly.

Hmmm, maybe. There's a "2 Eng" further up and they don't look the same.

However you've made me look again at the other columns and I've only just realised that he was a crew member and not a passenger! I wondered why he did the same trip twice in 6 weeks!

Thanks for looking Maggie.

The second one says 2nd Grade and I think it means 2nd grade whatever the occupation above is, which I think could be an abbreviation for Pantryman (if you browse some of the other passenger lists they do have Pantryman on some of them). They are just below the cooks. On the first one he is 2nd Gr something but I haven't deciphered the something yet (again, whatever the person above him is).

I think it might be something servant, with the people below being general servants. But not sure what the "something" is yet.

I'm wondering if it's just Grade 1 or 2 Seaman - a deckhand, chief bottle washer type of job!

I've just found him on the same data base as a seaman travelling from Vancouver to Sydney! Obviously working his passage, this image is a little clearer - he's a 2nd Class Asst Steward!
