Happy Easter everyone!

can you help me find Herbert Savory? born 10/8/1882 in Sheffield to John & Annie Elizabeth Cockayne.
He is living with his aunt Amelia & Farewell Oxley in 1891
1894 -1899 he's in Calder Farm reform school in Yorkshire
1901 he is at Chatham Barracks infantry militia. Though an entry on his reform record says he joined the scots & greys but deserted by 1902.

Hope you can help.

In 1911 Herbert Savory's mother says she has had nine children, four still living (two of whom are in the same household) and five who have died.

Have you been able to do anything with these numbers which might suggest whether Herbert was classed as dead or alive? (of course the numbers may not be accurate, but just thought Id ask!)

That's 8!

Do you have the last census dates for William, John and Frances?

So, you are saying John, William (2), Peter (d 1961) and Francis (d 1956) were all alive in 1911, so that might suggest Herbert had died by then (sometime 1902-1911)

It does appear that way, but i can not find anything on the gro death indexes. Though if he had deserted the militia, maybe he changed his name??

And/or his family disowned him and considered him dead?

Those reform school records (ancestry) for Herbert and brother William make sad reading.

Those reform school records (ancestry) for Herbert and brother William make sad reading.

They do, the father was jailed several times for not looking after the children, there a few newspaper articles about him, the whole family were very troubled often in trouble with the law & from what i can gather a poor family.

The reform records are amazing though, the detail & pictures are faboulous for researchers.

Can I just say that the thread title is a superb name for a book or TV series.
