His father John was a tailor, married to Elizabeth Butler.

"My" Ashley Coopers, as opposed to "the" Ashley Coopers lived in Chatteris, up to the 1780s.

Can anyone see where he gets his middle name from? Ancestry has an online tree, but it makes the assumption that this branch of Coopers were always in Ely and I'm not convinced it's correct as the surname is so common.

I've been trying to figure out whether the name Ashley could come from Elizabeth's side of the family but the 1851 census says she was born in Ely, the 1871 says Cambridge, and I assume they are missing from the 1861 as most of Ely seems to be missing. Maybe the witnesses' names from John and Elizabeth's marriage might help?

I feel that that is the only way in, Kite. I must try FREEREG as nothing I have seen online so far shows marriage witnesses.
