Elizabeth Newington was a daughter of John Newington & Elizabeth Chele of Salehurst, Sussex.

A family tree on The Weald at http://theweald.org/N10.asp?NId=5111164 notes her baptism in 1641. It also notes she died in 1668 however other records have her burial 13 Sept 1667.

I am unable to locate Elizabeth's baptism and all assistance gratefully received.

Westy, I have moved your thread to our Research Questions board.

Looking at the link you posted, the tree there seems mainly to have (apparently!) been sourced from the IGI on Family Search. However, I couldn't see that the IGI includes Salehurst records as all. There are family trees posted up to Family Search which include the Newington family, but we can't know where those tree creators obtained their information.

The year difference in the burial date may just be down to confusion over the workings of the pre-1752 calendar, though it's perhaps unexpected to find a discrepancy for a September entry!

I can't see that any of the usual sites have images of the PRs for this area, but I don't have any branches of my tree from Sussex so it's not something I've investigated before.

Have you considered viewing a film of the PRs for Salehurst etc at a LDS Family History Centre?

I see what would appear to be the will of Elizabeth's father is available to view on ancestry:

John Newington
Feb 1649
Salehurst, Sussex, England

and there are a few other PCC wills for Newington at Ticehurst.

Thanks Merry,

I was a tad unsure where to post so thanks.

As to viewing film fro the LDS - at the moment have mobility issues but in the future I have a list and will spend a lot of time at our local venue.

I believe they are going to stop the system of ordering films to the local FamilySearch Centres fairly soon.

It has been possible to view Sussex PRs through Family Search, but I am on my tablet and can't explain how at present, but I think there is a thread about this.

If there there is no solution I will come back to this when I can.

The Sussex Family History Group's Sussex Baptismal Index includes Salehurst from 1575 onwards and searching on the surname Newington comes up with some in Salehurst, but it looks as though you have to pay to join their society to view the results, or pay for a particular lookup:

I have been able to save lots of images but wonder if they will withdraw them as with the Cornwall ones.

It looks as though FamilySearch's online baptisms (transcriptions) for Salehurst only cover 1813-1881. FamilySearch's catalogue does show that the images are available from 1575, but you have to be at a Family History Center to view them:

Or you could contact East Sussex Record Office (The Keep) and ask whether they can check it for you? I don't know whether they would charge, and if so, how much. Unfortunately I can't get on with their website at all.

Thanks so much.

I do have a subscription to the SFHG but there are only a handful Newington baptisms and burials which says to me that the registers may have been lost/misplaced or perhaps as yet are not transcribed.

SFHG transcripts does have a burial at St Mary Salehurst for Elizabeth Newington 13 Sep 1667, dau of John, of Salehurst.
The only 'Newington' baptism I can see around this time in Salehurst is for Benjamin Newington 14 Apr 1650, father John Newington.

Oh, that's funny - it says you have to be at a FamilySearch Centre, but it does work when you log in at home! Thanks for that, Jill!

I've arrived home now and see that Jill has shown that you can view images. I have done it lots of times. It was following a post in a Lost Cousins Newsletter, I think.

I knew I posted it somewhere! I have been able to take screenshots of lots of the BMBs for my Sussex ancestors.

Identical question about Elizabeth Newington has been asked on Rootschat.

The Weald website accepts unverified family tree submissions from anyone so I think there was a bit of wishful thinking esp as the Weald tree doesn't have a date for the alleged baptism.

Oh, I didn't realise that there was actually no mention of her baptism on the Weald site or the IGI, as the original post on this thread said that there was.

In that case, I doubt that the 1667 burial is the daughter of the John who died in 1649. More likely the daughter of that John's son John - I know his marriage is down as 1677 but maybe he was married before that? Or the daughter of some other John Newington.
