Robert is a rigger in HM Dockyard. He is 48 and born in the Channel Islands.
His wife Mary is 45 and born in Portsmouth.

Their "daughter" Maud is 7 and born in Portsmouth.

In 1911 they are in Botley, and Robert is now retired.
Mary is given under her full name of Mary Huntley Gear.
They have been married for 28 years and they have no children.

I have looked for a birth and death of a Maud Gear, but could find nothing.
So did they try to adopt her and it didn't work out?

63 babies with Maud as a first name 1893 - 1895 registered in Portsmouth.

I don't fancy the elimination process, though.

I wonder when they moved to Botley? Burgess Rolls might show that. Maud might have wanted to stay and simply reverted to her birth surname.

Phoenix, I also looked at girls with the name Maud and was surprised just how many there were!

I think this is one mystery I won't solve. It's one of the branches of my tree, so it's not particularly important, but my curiosity is aroused!

Oooh, well spotted, Merry! When I searched earlier I didn't find anything.

I wondered if she married Sydney H L Wallace in 1914 in Alverstoke. I can't find him in 1939 (died 1967) but I wondered if this is Maud:

Maude Wallace 21 Apr 1893 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married

at Ashorne Bursledon Road, Hedge End , Winchester R.D., Hampshire

and she might be the one who died in Southampton district in 1949.

None of which tells us who her parents were!

(I don't know why Hedge End is listed as Winchester? Isn't it in Southampton??)

There is Sydney H L Wallace dying in Gosport in 1967, aged 80, so the one you found, Merry. Probably in the armed forces in 1939.

Sydney's death is also entered under Sydney H Lefebra-Wallace.

He would have been quite old, though my grandfather served in WW2 and he was about the same age.

Perhaps he was training for the Home Guard or Civil Defence?

The Wallace marriage is definitely the right one/person, as in 1939 we have:

Mary H Gear 26 Dec 1855 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Widowed

at "Olive Dene" off Northern Road, Hedge End , Winchester R.D., Hampshire

and living with her is the second daughter of Maud Wallace , Kathleen M L Cove (later Lovelock) and her first husband, Joseph George Cove (died 1972). Kathleen died in 2002.
