PDF Pilot Phase 3

We are trialling a service from 16 March to provide PDF copies of our non-digitised records. Records will not be immediately viewable, but emailed as a PDF.

Applications for each PDF cost £8, must be made online and include a GRO index reference.

England and Wales records which are available as PDF's in pilot 3 include:
Births: 1935-2006
Deaths: 1958-2006
Marriages: 1837-2010

Full details are in About the PDF Pilot

Note: A PDF is not a certificate and has no value for services where a certificate is required e.g. a Passport or Driving Licence application, or Notice of Marriage

Pilot phase 3 closes at 4pm on 12 April or when 40,000 PDF's have been ordered, whichever is sooner. Analysis of the pilot will then follow.

Indexes
Have you used our Online Historical Birth and Death Indexes yet? They may include extra information; maiden name and age at death. See Most Customers Want to Know.

Interesting that you can only order births and deaths up to 2006 and marriages up to 2010. I wonder why not up to 2017?

Does 2006 tie in with when RON (Registration On Line System) was introduce?

Other than being slightly more expensive, what's the difference between this service and the first pilot a few moths ago?

The first pilot was only for births 1837-1916 & deaths 1837-1957 already in digital format.

This pilot is for records not in digital format.

So how would you know if the record you wanted was digital or not?

When the contract ended on the DoVE project back in 2008 births 1837-1934 & deaths 1837-1957 had be digitalised & that hasn't changed.

Oh, OK. Thanks Jay.

Wasn't this cheaper before?

I'm not sure why I'd want to order a digital copy if I'm only saving £1.50

Ironically, the first pilot, where THEY provided you with the reference, was cheaper.

I assume that this is more expensive because the records are not digitised, but the onus is on us to provide the reference - and of course this is nigh impossible for marriages post 2007.

I agree, £1.50 is hardly an incentive to rush out and buy heaps of certificates. That's probably why they have set a lower target.

Maybe they are just testing the market in terms of what the punter is willing to pay! I didn't think the first pilot was particularly cheap either, considering that once it is up and running it will be virtually automatic.

They do say somewhere that final costs have not yet been set.

Agreed, but the cost of digitising and indexing those records have to be recovered somehow.

It will be interesting to see the eventual cost, as I that assumed the cost of the DOVE project had already been recovered over the last ten years.
