On the PR copy of Samuel Banks' marriage to Martha Cotterell, I can see the "mark of Samuel Banks", and one of the witnesses is Rob Hilton, but what does the other bit say? The BT's copy has no attempt at transcribing that part, and doesn't say that Martha signed or made her mark.

Oh dear. It looks like a demented five year old with a crayon....
You are not helped by the fact that I think Martha's mark lurks underneath it.
Sorry, but I can't make anything sensible from it.

I couldn't decipher it either, Kate. I agree with Phoenix that I think Martha's mark is there.

Thanks for trying. Hopefully it will turn out not to be the Martha who I'm looking for.

That's horrendous. My guess would be the witness was illiterate but pretended otherwise, rather than simply giving their mark.
