I'm returning to this branch of OH's family. They are very elusive.

We have a Mr Caveler (variant spellings) who had at least the following children:

James born c. 1750 buried 5 January 1814 at St Ethelreda, Hatfield, Hertfordshire
He left a will.
Ann born c. 1755 married Thomas Tufnall, died aged 61 and buried on 20 August 1817 at St Ethelreda, Hatfield
Henry born c. 1757 married Sarah Crouch in 1783 at Hatfield. Died 1831, buried 9 January 1831 at Hatfield.
Elizabeth born ?, married Henry Bowne in 1773 at Hatfield. 4 children.

I have posted about them before. Ann is OH's 4x-great-grandfather.

Can anyone find any baptisms for them? I don't know who their parents are.
Did they come out of London and might they be Huguenot?

FMP has the burial of Martha Caveller 3 May 1797 at Hatfield, age 85:

Also John Caviller 23 Jun 1786 and Mary Caviller 4 Sep 1795 but no ages are shown for them.

And a Joseph buried 17 Jun 1800 at St Stephen, St Albans, again no age, I'm not quite sure what his surname is but it begins with Cavala:

I'm thinking Martha could be the mother of James, Ann, Henry and Elizabeth as she would be about the right age and several of them named children Martha, didn't they?

Thanks, Kate, I'll have a good look at them all.

Martha's dates fit in well.

FamilySearch and BMD Registers have a John Cavelier marrying on 28 May 1743 in a Fleet wedding, reference RG7/197, which is "Marriages and Baptisms from Walter Wyatt's Register of the Fleet Registers performed according to the Rules of the Fleet, London from 1741 to 1744". But I can't find it on FMP or ancestry to see who he married!

I have just found this on Ancestry:

Name: Henry Caverley
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 25 Dec 1757
Baptism Place: Hatfield,Hertford,England
Father: Henry Caverley
Mother: Martha
FHL Film Number: 569725, 569726, 569727

I had pencilled in the father as Henry, but I can't remember why!

There is also this burial:
First name Henry
Last name Caverly
Burial year 1778
Burial date 03 Sep 1778
Place Hatfield
County Hertfordshire
Record set Hertfordshire Burials

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbprs%2fd%2f72623291%2f1

so the name seems to have changed.

I can't find the marriage of Henry and Martha, though. I can't search well on Hertfordshire Names Online as the name has to be exact and you can't put in variants.

Elizabeth Caverly was baptised at Hatfield on 12 February 1748/9.

FMP has burials for Hugh Caverley 16 Sep 1745 and James Caverley, son of Hugh, 15 Oct 1726, both at Hatfield.
Then searching their Hertfordshire Baptisms database, I had to try leaving the surname blank and putting father's name Hugh, place Hatfield, baptism year I tried 1726 +- 20 years, and then quite a few children of Hugh and Mary come up, with surname as Calvery or similar, including Henry Calverly, 8 Aug 1718.

Also, not sure whether you have already seen John Calverley baptised 24 Jan 1762, son of Henry and Martha?

Hi Kate, yes, I have been working on this.

Henry was the son of Hugh and Mary.
He was baptised on 8th August 1718 at Hatfield. I'm downloading the images of the baptisms etc for this family.

I found John too, slightly later than the others!

and here is another copy of it:

Neither version says where Martha was from.

Wow, many thanks.

I have just found the marriage of Hugh Covely and Martha Johnson at Essendon (close to Hatfield) 19th April 1715.

There are Harrow baptisms at Hatfield, including a couple for Martha Harrow.
More detective work ongoing!

I have a theory here.

It says on the burial for Martha Caveller in 1797 that she was 85. However, then she would have been born in c. 1712, which is rather late to be having baby John in 1762.

A Martha is born to Henry and Sarah Harrow and baptised at Hatfield on 16th May 1731.
This would mean she was 17 in 1748, and young, which is why they might have gone to London to marry.

The same couple had a Martha in 1728 but I hope to find a burial for her!

There is also a Martha Harrow baptised in 1722 at Hatfield to Michael and Elizabeth.

If she had been born in 1731/2 she would have been 65 at death.

It definitely looks more like 85 than 65, though!

Yes, I think her age at death could be wrong given we know when Henry was born now.

Martha Harrow infant was buried at Hatfield on 21 July 1730, so that accounts for the first one for Henry and Sarah Harrow.

Yes, I think her age at death could be wrong given we know when Henry was born now.

The scenario is much better if Martha is 20 years younger!
