Hannah Newton was baptised at Old St George, Stalybridge, Cheshire.

Please could I have ideas for what is written after the word "Stayley"?

It's the fifth entry on the left-hand page.

It looks like (singer) Clerk pd. M

M looks as if it means the Staley area. Don't ask why that abbreviation, though!

It's the "Singer" part that is perplexing me, Phoenix.

Thanks for your help.

Lancs OPC has the following:

Baptism: 24 Jan 1808 Old St George, Stalybridge, Lancs.
Hannah Newton - D. of Joseph Newton & Jane
Abode: Stayley
Occupation: Singer
Notes: M. [continuation of entry reads] -

I'm not sure how Joseph was a Singer!
In 1815 he was a Woolen Clothier in business with his Buckley uncles and aunts.
By the late 1820s he was down in Southwark and had set up business as a Fire Brick Merchant.

My personal guess would be that he had a fancy christening for the baby, complete with a bit of music, for which the clerk was paid extra

Here it is on ancestry:

It's not clear whether Singer is the father's occupation, though, as it doesn't give most fathers' occupations.

Looking at the beginning of the book, the letters in the right-hand margin are A=Ashton, M=Mottram, S=Stockport.

I hadn't thought of that, Phoenix.

I have only found two children for them, and Hannah was the first. The second was James in 1811, OH's 2x-grandfather.

Thanks, Kate. The abbreviations are very useful!

No mention of a singer at James' baptism!

The word "Singer" looks to have been added later, in a different hand.

It couldn't be Hannah's maiden name, could it?

Mary, I've never been able to prove it conclusively, but the only marriage I could find for Joseph Newton and Jane was on 15th November 1806 at Manchester Cathedral.

Jane was Jane Hall.

It says Joseph lived in Manchester, which I wouldn't have expected.

When Joseph's son, James, married in 1834 at St Saviour, Southwark, one of the witnesses was Arnold Hall.

However, I haven't been able to trace Jane's family so far.

Hannah was also the name of Joseph's mother, who was born Hannah Buckley.
