I'm looking for any help researching into the Bugg family. Sarah Bugg married Thomas Barrell in 1795 in Kettlebaston Suffolk, but I can find no trace of her ancestors. I know they went on to have two children (thomas and Phoebe) but am looking for a link back on her side

how old was she when she married?

I think she was about 25. My only hint is that she was born around 1770, but I'm not sure if this is correct or even where. I have the marriage from the parish record that lists her of the parish, but I can find no record of her baptism or her parents

Do you have the names of the witnesses at her wedding, and have you found her burial?

This isn't her is it?

1851 HO107; Piece: 1797; Folio: 368; Page: 24

The family nextdoor are called Bugg.

There's a Thomas and Sarah together here in 1841:

HO107; Piece 1018; Book: 9; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 5; Page: 14; Line: 23;

and between 1841 and 1851 there's a death for Thomas but none for Sarah in Bosmere district (so that fits).

Quote from Rootschat:

The nearest village to Kettlebaston is Hitcham if you look at the records for there a Sarah Bugg was baptised there on 29 May 1776. There is no record of a marriage in Hitcham.

Hitcham is the place of birth recorded in 1851 so that looks promising. Pity the Rootsweb messager didn't give her parents names!

Another quote, but I can't get the next bit for her mother! lol

Sarah BUGG was born in 1776 in Hitcham, Suffolk, England. She was baptised on 29 May 1776 in Hitcham, Suffolk, England. Parents: James BUGG and … …

There's an entry on FamilySearch Record Search for Sarah Bugg baptised 27th May 1776 Archdeaconry of Sudbury, Suffolk, parents James and Mary, which is probably the same as that Hitchin baptism.

I presume this is Sarah's death as she is still with son Samuel in 1861.

Deaths Jun 1861
Barrell Sarah Bosmere 4a 354

Samuel was b in Baylham which is where Thomas and Sarah were in 1841, plus Phoebe's children were b in Baylham according to the 1851 census. So, if you can prove there really is a bap in Hitcham in 1776 I would say this allties together well. Sarah is said to have been b in Kettlebaston on the 1861 census, but I think Kettlebaston and Hitcham are only about a mile apart.

Ooh, yes, there are some baptisms listed at Hitcham with parents James and Mary Bugg - Mary 17th May 1772 (buried 30 Sep 1772), another Mary 29th May 1774, Elizabeth 25th Mar 1780. Not sure why Sarah isn't listed in the Hitcham baptisms too, though.

Just as an aside, years ago I knew a Miss Bugg at work. She pronouced it Beoog.

That's fantastic - I found the 1841 census but there are a few other Thomas and Sarah Barrell's listed so I wasn't sure that they were the same. I have now found a burial for her in 1861 which would fit - buried in Barking. If this is the right Sarah then I think this must put her with the Bugg line from Barking? The only thing that throws me is that I know Thomas and Sarah had children in Kettlebaston (thomas and Phoebe ~ 1798), but I couldn't find any more and then I have a Samuel and Mary Ann listed in 1817 and 1814 in Baylham/Nettlestead which seems a long time apart?

I expect there were others in between, maybe in another parish that isn't online.

I have now found a marriage in Hitcham of James Bugg to Mary Pendell, but no baptism for either
