Hello,

I'm trying to find census data and the like to make this connection. Alpheus Finch is the son of Nathaniel Finch listed on this website:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~landonlineage/p31.htm#i438614

Nothing from Conklin, NY.

Any help would be appreciated....

I need proof for the Winthrop Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.

Thx Jason

Welcome to the forum, Jason.

This is Alpheus Finch on the 1850 US census, as referred to on the page that you linked to:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8054/4196765-00043/11271600?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3d1850usfedcenancestry%26so%3d2 %26pcat%3d35%26_phsrc%3diNh1657%26_phstart%3dsucce ssSource%26usePUBJs%3dtrue%26gss%3dangs-c%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26msT%3d1%26gsfn%3dalp*s*%2 6gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln%3dfinch*%26gsln_x%3d1%26MSAV%3d 2%26MS_AdvCB%3d1%26cpxt%3d1%26cp%3d12%26catbucket% 3drstp&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

Conklin, Broome County, NY
Alpheus Finch age 80, born NY
Mary Finch age 60, born NJ

The preceding household is Ezekiel Finch and the following one is Ruff Finch.

This looks like his household on the 1840 census although he has himself down as age 50-60 when he should be older:

Union, Broome County, NY:
Head of family Alphas Finch
1 male age 5-10
2 males age 10-15
1 male age 20-30
1 male age 50-60
1 female age 10-15
1 female age 40-50

There are some other Finch households on the page but I can't see how they fit in with the names on the "Landon Lineage" page.

1830 census at Conklin, Broome Co, NY:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8058/4410712_00137/2138923?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
Head of family Alpheus Finch
1 male age 10-15
1 male age 15-20
1 male age 60-70
1 female age 10-15
1 female age 50-60

There is another Alpheus Finch at Pitcher, Chenango County, NY:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8058/4410671_00158/1486463?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
1 male under 5
1 male 10-15
1 male 40-50
1 female under 5
1 female 5-10
1 female 20-30
1 female 30-40
The next household is headed by Sylvanus Finch, age 60-70, so I think that these are the people who were at Union in 1840 and I need to go back to the 1840 and have another look for your Alpheus.

Ah yes, this is the right family in 1840, so ignore the 1840 link in post #2:

It might be a good idea. If you haven't had a free trial before then you should be able to get a 14-day one but make sure to note down how to cancel it before you have to pay, in case you want to.

FamilySearch does give free access to a lot of US census images, maybe all of them, I'm not sure, but they don't seem to have a full index to them all yet, so more likely to find him by searching on ancestry.

It's late here in the UK so I will have to come back to this tomorrow.

This looks like him on the 1800 census at Duanesburgh, Albany Co, NY:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/7590/4440898_00042/534281?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
Alpheas Finch head of family, 2 boys age 0-10, 1 man 26-45, 3 girls 0-10, 1 woman 16-26.

And I think this is your Alpheus Finch on the 1810 census at Bridgewater, Luzerne Co, PA:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/7613/4433433_00195/450457?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
It doesn't show the column headings but I think it says two boys age 10-16, 1 man age 26-45, 2 girls age 0-10 and 2 girls age 10-16.

And in 1820 at Silver Lake, Susquehanna Co, PA:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/7734/4433403_00045/188306?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return
Again, it doesn't show the column headings but I think it is two boys under 10, 2 men over 45, 1 girl under 10, 1 girl 10-16, 1 woman 26-45 and 1 woman over 45.

Although these are in PA, they are close to the NY border.

I can't find him as a head of family in 1790 but he was probably still in his father's household at that time. Not sure which one that is though. I don't think censuses are going to prove that he is Nathaniel's son, so we need to find something else.

Find a Grave website has a photo of Alpheus Finch's gravestone at Quaker Lake Cemetery, Brackney, Susquehanna County, PA:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=94334514&ref=acom

It says Alpheus Finch died Feb 19 1858 Aged 88 yrs 3 Mo's & 21 d's.

The rest of the information on the page may or may not be correct as we don't know where it came from.

I don't know whether it will help to see Frank Clifford Finch's application for membership of the Sons of the American Revolution from 1951, which was approved:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2204/32596_242318-00371/759634?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return

and his son Jerrald Fletcher Finch's from 1967 (also approved):
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2204/32596_242393-00325/1040792?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return

Having finally clicked on Nathaniel Finch's name in "A Landon Lineage", it is clear that not everything on that site can be correct as it says he was born 1740 and died 1858! Frank Clifford Finch's application says Nathaniel died on or after 21 May 1825. Just wondering whether we can find if he left a will as it might name Alpheus as his son.

This is Nathaniel Finch's memorial on Find a Grave but it is obviously a recent stone:

It looks as though this is where the date of 21 May 1825 came from with reference to Nathaniel, and shows he was alive then:
http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/f/i/n/Paul-R-Finch/GENE2-0020.html

If only we could find full details of the 1825 "citation directed to heirs of Jacob Finch" as it might name Alpheus.

You could try contacting the owner of that Finch family tree to ask whether he has anything to prove that Alpheus Finch was Nathaniel Finch's son, maybe the 1825 citation?
