Ancestry DNA Test

Looking to compare notes with others who have taken this test.

I'm OK with the ethnic mix, although it's not quite what I was expecting. I am unsure how I can be 16% Irish when there is no Irish blood in the direct line in the last 200 years. Maybe that's just osmosis from spending five years of my life mostly in the Four Provinces Club.

I'm now looking at the matches. I have a match with someone I expected to have a match with, which is good. I don't match with someone I expected to match with, which is a concern. I've now had a new match, estimated at second cousin, from someone who doesn't have any of 'my' surnames in her tree.

Is anybody having real luck with these matches or are they like GR 'hot matches'?

I think you will find that when Ancestry say Irish they often mean Scottish! They certainly did in my brother's case - he was 39% Irish according to them. We have no known Irish ancestry but lots of Scottish and a lot of googling produced the info that Ancestry lump certain Irish and Scottish DNA together.

As for not matching where you would expect to - if you can rule out obvious illegitimacy then the answer is that you and the other person did not inherit any of the same genes from the common ancestor, so your DNA relationship is lost forever, unless you can triangulate with someone who matches a bit of yours and a bit of the other person.


Meant to say - my brother was contacted by someone WO had a match to our tree. Not only could we not find one single name or geographical location uncommon with her tree, her tree itself is such an inaccurate load of tripe it wouldn't be any use anyway, too many 3 year old grandfathers and 100 year old mothers, you know the sort of thing.

It's also Welsh , so Celt would be a better description.

No Welsh, Scottish or Irish in the last two hundred years. Most puzzling.

I agree with the previous Celtic connections mentioned rather than just Irish. I got my results recently and I am 6% Irish but I have no Irish ancestry but I do have two Scottish ancestors way back on both sides of my family so I believe my 'Irish' is actually my Scottish :)

They are certainly relentless with their constant e-mails and offers. It seems someone high up at Ancestry is determined to open up the gene pool a bit.
