We are trying to trace the parents of Edward Jones - born Sheffield about 1873, married Mary Jane Jones in Newtown 1899, 5 known children, plus another who died before 1911 according to the 1911 census.

Possible on 1891 census is Edward Jones, 18, servant born Sheffield at Tregynon, or another age 17 at Cyfoeth y Brenin, Cardiganshire. Neither is with family.

Marriage cert gives his age as 22, residence Bryncae Tregynon, and father's name as Edward Jones (deceased). Witnesses Ann Jones and William Jones.

Edward Jones age 25 on 1901 Welsh census at Llanwnnog

Edward H Jones age 34 on 1911 census.

Died 18 Jan 1956 at the General Hospital, St Asaph, residence Pendryndeudraeth, Minffordd.

Buried Porthmadog Cemetery.

National Probate Calendar 1956:
JONES Edward of Trem Tecwyn Tyddyn Llwyn-terrace Minffordd Merionethshire died 18 January 1956 at The General Hospital St Asaph Probate Bangor 16 February to William Jones farmer. Effects £871 10s.

Celebrated his birthday on 1st Jan, and the 1939 Register gives his dob as 1 Jan 1876. (1 Jan is a popular choice for people who aren't sure of their actual date of birth, though.) Possible birth reg was Jan-Mar 1876 Sheffield but that Edward's father was William and was still alive in 1901, so doesn't look likely to be him. Not the Edward Jones born Sheffield who is in Northampton on the 1881 census. May well have been an orphan and / or in the workhouse.

Religion from his marriage cert is Calvinistic Methodist. And he was a lay preacher.

On two daughters' birth certs he is Edward Humphrey Jones. Worked as a railway foreman platelayer, lived at 426 Railway Crossing, Pendryndeudraeth. His obituary in the Herald Cymraeg 30/1/1956 says that he was born in the Newtown area, Montgomeryshire (but gives wrong place of death, so unreliable).

Witness William Jones was Mary Jane's Father, Mary Jane's mother was Elizabeth

Reading back through it, most of the info suggests he was born 1876 or 1877 rather than 1873, doesn't it? (I know I typed 1873 in the message that I sent you, Zoe! But I didn't have time to read it through again before I sent it!) The 1891 census possibles are born about 1873-4, but I wonder whether we can find any younger possibles on that census, or the 1881.

Ages on death certs are generally less accurate than on marriage certs and censuses, because they are given by someone else, not the actual person concerned. Of course there are exceptions.

I looked at the GRO indexes, for Edward Jones, born Sheffield 1877 came up with this

Edward Jones 1877 J Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 523d MMN Hallgate

There are quite a few Jones children with mmn Halllgate in Sheffield district if you widen your search on the GRO site. I've forgotten the name of the parents now - may have been William and Mary (from matching the names on the birth regs to census families)?

EDIT - Yes, there was a son called Enoch which clinched it (because he also had mmn Hallgate and there's only the one Enoch Jones to fit on the census). The Edward you mentioned is still with his parents in 1901 when yours is in Wales and married.
