My 4 x great grandfather George Shields (1786-1870) married his second wife Isabella Roseby at Easington Lane, Co. Durham in 1854.

From their marriage cert she was 40, a spinster, the daughter of Thomas Roseby.

In 1861 George aged 77 and Isabella aged 47 are living at Brick Garth, Hetton le Hole, Co. Durham. Isabella is listed as being born in Northumberland.

George died at Brick Garth in 1870, his death wasn't registered by Isabella, he is buried at Hetton le Hole.

There's an Isabella Shields buried at Hetton le Hole in 1885 but she appears to be the wife of a Robert Shields.

Can anyone find Isabella after 1861 or her death?

I was trying to establish her exact place of birth from this:

But other than it doesn't say Biggin Hill (lol that's what the transcription is!) I'm really none the wiser. Looks like Biggnham.

FamilySearch has Anna-Bell Roseby baptised at Longbenton, Northumberland, 5 Jun 1814, parents Thomas and Elizabeth. Also Joseph and John 1 Oct 1826, so they fit with the 1841 census family.
Isabella's birthplace on the 1851 census looks like Biggs Main, which is apparently a hamlet close to Wallsend. But not far from Longbenton.

I think it says Biggs Main.

Those look likely to be her.

In 1861 George and Isabella have his son, James aged 30, living with them. James has no occupation,

In 1871 James is in the Houghton le Spring workhouse and he is recorded as an imbecile.

So, was life in the Shields household just too much for Isabella? - looking after James and an ageing husband? Not that this helps us find her, but gives another reason why we may not be able to find her.

I've wondered the same Merry & also wondered did James end up in the workhouse as there was no one to look after him.

I've found this death, the ages is a few years out & both records are Shield rather than Shields.

Death
Isabella Shield
2nd quarter 1867
aged 48
Houghton le Spring RD

Burial
Isabella Shield
3/4/1867
aged 48
Hetton le Hole

I can't see any likely candidates for this Isabella on the census.

Oh, I don't know how I didn't see that when I looked at all GRO entries for all Isabellas in Houghton le Spring!! Maybe I thought her age was too far off at the beginning, but then forgot about the entry once I'd not found her anywhere else!!

I'm not surprised if her age is off really, given the rest of her circumstances.

I agree that James probably ended up in the workhouse because he had no one to care for him.

I don't know why I didn't spot it before but I don't think I've searched without the S before!

Email going off to Sunderland Register Office to see if they'll confirm her husband is listed as George then i'll order the PDF from the GRO.

Can you do that? I've asked to buy a cert if a name matches, but I've never asked not to buy one if the name matches!!

Oh yeah I've done that for years & it's been mostly successful, although I would say I've generally bought those certs as they've been for direct ancestors.

I've been going through my tree identifying spouses of direct ancestors & filling in a few gaps. I've ordered about 15 death PDF's which I think is just about covers them, I've already got marriage certs/printouts to my ancestor & am considering if I should get birth PDF where possible.

Merry

I think I have all the bmd certs possible for all of my known ancestors now that I've purchased 11 death cert pdfs.

There are just a couple of ancestors who might have had a parent live to after 1837 if only I knew who they were!!

JayG

That's good Merry!

I ordered 3 deaths for newly found direct ancestors last week, I've got 2 births and 2 deaths I can't find or weren't registered & think I've got all possible BMD's now.

I've thought on & off about getting the certs for the spouses of direct ancestors for a while but didn't fancy forking out a tenner each for them but don't mind £6 since when I first started out certs were £5.50!

Sunderland RO have replied & that is my Isabella's death, can't believe they've replied that quickly .... feel slightly guilty that I'm ordering from the GRO :(
