What I can't read is Jean Galloway's address 7 ..... Street, Paisley.

At first glance I thought it said Dock Street, but I'm not so sure now, but of course can't read it as anything else now! I looked at the 1851 census, but only found a Jean Galloway (don't know if she's the right one) at 25 Great Hamilton Street!!

Yes, I knew she was at Great Hamilton Street later on, as it was on his death certificate as well.

Its the other address I can't read - 7 ... Street - It looks like an H or a K, but there is a capital R before the street???

I still think the capital R you mention is a K (as in Dock, but maybe not Dock!!).

EDIT Is it Stock Street?

The demolition site of Great Hamilton Street in 1964, looking onto Union Street running towards Stock Street and the old RAI

mentioned here:

Stock Street sounds feasible looking at the site you sent.

I would never have guessed it as Stock Street though. I would have looked it up in Paisley, but had no idea what street I was looking for at that stage!

I'll go with Stock Street, as there is one in Paisley.

Thanks Merry & OC

Forget that I was thinking it was a census.

I did look for the 1851 census for Jane Grieve as she was then - I thought I had it, but I don't. However, other 1851 censuses in Scotland did not show any addresses.

That's odd isn't it? I looked for Jane Galloway (not Grieve) and found someone of that name at Great Hamilton Street and you said "Yes I know", but now I'm presuming the person I found was not the right Jane.

Do you know when and where she was born and I'll have another look, this time for Jane Grieve :D

Merry my tree goes
William Laughlan - Jane (Jean) Grieve (Greive) 2nd marriage Jane Baird (don't know his first name)
Her parents were Jane Galloway & Peter Grieve, 2nd marriage Thomas Andrew

Jane Galloway was born around 1803, died 3 Jan 1878 Paisley Renf.
Married Peter Grieve 22 Feb 1824 in Paisley Renf. and married Thomas Andrew 14 Aug 1856 Paisley.
Daughter Jane Grieve born 1832 Paisley Renf. 1832, married William Laughlan 16 Oct 1855, Partick, Ayr and ? Baird later (William having died 16 Dec 1868)

Laughlan has been spelt many many different ways.

Confusing that all the Laughlans were William and their wives were Jane (Jean)
The original William from Ireland, married Jane Stewart

She calls herself Galloway on the 1856 marriage cert, so no reason why she couldn't be Galloway on the 1851 census too.

Or do you mean that you can't find her daughter in 1851?

The 21 Great Hamilton Street, Paisley address was shown on Jane Andrew's death certificate, Merry.

Scotlands People won't let me in right now. (to check census 1851)

Yes, she is Jean Galloway in 1851 as she is living with her son and grandson named Grieve.

EDIT - that's on Ancestry, I don't know about SP.

Thanks Merry, was just going to send some notes I had

Birth shown in IDG register as 1835 . Aged 23 and a domestic servant at time of marriage on 16/10/1855. At time of son William's marriage in Dec. 1878, she had been a widow and remarried a Mr. Baird. Died prior 1903. I know now she died 16 Dec 1868) In 1856 at the birth of son John, Laughlan was spelt as Lachlan.

But I really just wanted to know the name of the street her mother Jane Greive/Galloway) lived in when she married Thomas Andrew.

We now think it is Stock, but it doesnt look like Stock!

There is a public tree on ancestry which has her marrying a William Baird 11 Aug 1876 at New Sneddon, Paisley. You should be able to check this on Scotland's People.

Don't you think it does? It's definitely ??ock, and the first bit is very possibly St, so I think there's a very good chance it's Stock Street.

Merry, I'll go along with you - as you are much more experienced than I. So Stock it is.
Kate, will have a look at that marriage. Scotlands People has changed their format, and I'm still coming to terms with navigating! lol

You'd think this would be easy, but I am still looking!

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry, Jood. Search the Statutory Registers: Marriages (on SP) for surname Grieve, year 1876 to 1876, county Renfrew, and you should get two results, one being Jeannie Grieve, ref 573/193 as you posted up. There is a link you can click for "Spouse details" and if you click that, it says William Baird and Jeannie Laughlin. There is also a button to click to view the image for 6 credits.
