View Full Version : Anyone good at deciphering a mge cert?
Hi everyone, I can read all of the marriage certificate except the two addresses - the second one looks like 32 Keston Road, E.Dulwich (we have a Dulwich, here in Sydney, NSW) :)
- the first address I am not sure of.

That's right; East Dulwich is a suburb of London:

The other one is 28 Sandborne Road, Brockley, another London suburb:

Thanks Mary, you know more about the UK than I do, though I've visited, but not known London suburbs for example.
It did look like Brockley, I must admit, but I wondered what the next set of letters meant. Is it S-W (south west?)
I guess I could have googled it myself - I should have at least tried. I do that here in Australia.
I think the abbreviation is SE - a postal district of London: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_postal_district

I used to live in London, which helps, but I'd never heard of Brockley.
The easiest thing to do when you want to find an address is just to put it into Google maps, and if the road still exists with the same name, you can see it:

It's just below New Cross, but I have a huge challenge, working out whether it is historically in Kent or Surrey. I stock the old maps on behalf of my society, but it took me ages before I did so as it is such a grey area.

Brockley station is on the slow line from London Bridge to Croydon. Brockley is/was the home of Goldsmiths College, University of London.
