This relates to Pudsey Mussendine but I thought I would post a new thread as the original thread about him got into complicated stuff about the Dry family. This should be much more straightforward, I hope!

Pudsey's baptism record - 8 Oct 1817 at St Cross (Holywell), Oxford, says he was the son of Maximilian Muscendine. But various sources, old books etc say his father was William Mussendine, and I can't find any trace of a Maximilian Muscendine or Mussendine anywhere else. Some of the other records for William's children say "Mr William Muscendine" so my question is this - do you think the baptism record could have been written that way in the day book and then misread as Maximilian when it was copied into the parish register?

Well it sounds plausible to me. It's not as if Maximilian is a common name in England, let alone Oxfordshire. The script in the register is in several hands, so perhaps someone mistook someone else's handwriting ?
