NOTE - HEADING SHOULD READ FTM WRONG PARENTS (COULD MODS PLEASE AMEND?)

Part of one of my older family shows (for instance) - in Family Tree Maker
born 1765, then her parents b 1726, his parents born 1698 his parents born 1672, and then for some reason, shows my daughter and her husband as their parents, - how can I "Unhook" them without losing any information?

This tells you how to do it with various different versions of FTM:

Make a back-up copy of your tree before you start, in case you make a mistake.

Thanks Mary, but if I highlight the person born 1600+ it only gives me the same family - husband wife and child, but if I highlight my daughter above it, it only shows her, her husband and HER children. (No sign of the older people)

It does show ME as her parents tho

I've done the easy bit - changing the heading of this thread, but I've never used FTM, so can't help with that. :o

Thanks Merry - there were no mods on when I typed it up incorrectly!

How odd. Try highlighting the 1672 family again; is there a second marriage for one of them? Maybe you've somehow accidentally married one of them to one of your family :)

No, the couple before my kids only married the once.

My daughters name only appears once in the list of names, but twice in the tree. The other time is at the start, where my name is.

How odd. I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas.

Its ok thanks Mary, I might take the plunge and remove my daughter (somehow)

I think you can detach her and then reattach her to the correct family.

I have just discovered a whole heap of errors in FTM, Uncle John. FTM has been shutting down on me several times, and has warned me - and now my own grandparents' parents were supposedly born 200 years before they were (that's another instance).

Looks like I might have to start all over again - 35 years of family history. Fortunately my other daughter is also doing it, but in another program.

Haven't you got any backup files, Jood?

Kate, yes I think I backed up a while ago. I've never restored a backup - just wondering if it would interfere with the current trees tho?

Jood before you do anything compact the file over and over until you get a zero percentage.

It might be worthwhile asking the support people for their ideas too. mackiev.com

Thanks Toni, will try that tomorrow.

Is there something happening to your computer, perhaps? Hard disk poorly or shortage of memory?

Actually UJ - Toni's suggestion of compacting the file, seems to have worked. I can't find any rellies out of place (so far)

I recently had everything re-installed (the problem was happening before that)
