I wonder if anyone would have an idea what the following document might

suggest? Its held at the National Archives but not available for download.

The infant Sarah was my 5xg/grandmother. She married John Trenley in

1753.

Her mother Sarah Snr married George Lack after the death of her husband

Thomas Newman Snr. The John Newman mentioned is his brother & the

This is Thomas Newman's will, proved 14 Apr 1737:

He left his whole estate to be divided equally between his wife Sarah and his children Thomas and Sarah, with Sarah sr's share to be divided equally between Thomas and Sarah jr on Sarah sr's death, with all three named as executors in the will, which was written 12 Mar 1736/7. Administration was granted to Sarah sr solely, with power reserved to Thomas and Sarah jr "when either of them shall pray the same" but I guess they were too young at the time? It doesn't say what would happen if Sarah sr were to marry again, unlike many wills of the time which would have left her a trust or lifetime interest which she would lose if she married again. (It doesn't have as much legalese as many wills so perhaps he wrote it himself instead of engaging a lawyer?) So I am guessing that Sarah sr and her new husband were spending money, or perhaps selling property, which her children looked on as their own inheritance? Was John Wilkins perhaps related to them too and looking out for their interests?

The PCC will of John Wilkins of Chalfont St Peter (also 1740) doesn't seem to help.

Thanks Kite & Merry. I'm not aware of a Wilkins in my tree but I have a Wilkinson - Ann,

who was later Sarah Jnr's mother in law, wife of John Trenley's father Edward.

I think John Wilkins, gent of Chalfont St Peter, was some sort of official. I see he is

mentioned as trustee of various things.

Sarah Jnr would have been about 12 in 1740 & her brother Thomas,9.
