I'm looking into the life of Fred Bacon. He was born around 1875 in the village of Grainsby, Louth registration district, Lincolnshire...probably. I have not found a record of the birth. In some census records, his place of birth is listed as Grimsby. But Grimsby and Grainsby can be muddled up when enumerators transcribed notebooks.

I have Fred Bacon in 1911, 36, fish merchant, living with his wife Edith and three chidren, in Grimsby.

In 1901, he is with wife Edith in Grimsby. He is 26 and she is 29. In this census he is a grocer's assistant.

I think I've found him in 1891 boarding in North Thoresby with the Veasey's - the job is listed as a grocer's assistant, which ties in with the 1901 record.

No joy with 1881. Can anyone track him down, please?

NOTE: There is another Fred Bacon, a gamekeeper, who is also from Grainsby, who is related. I am not chasing this one, but he is likely to crop up on searches.

I have a cutting of a newspaper report on the death of the above Fred Bacon and Mr H Bacon (nephew), Grimsby, Mr F Bacon (nephew), Grimsby are listed as family mourners.

I have been told the Fred I am chasing had a brother named Herbert Bacon. He too went to Grimsby and was a fish merchant.

I note that another of the family mourners at the funeral were named as Mr and Mrs E L Riggall, Waltham, great niece and nephew. If anyone can find how the Rigalls and Bacons are linked, that would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance. I'll keep hunting myself in the meantime.

There is a John W Bacon, 18, born Grainsby, footman, domestic servant at The Hall, Grainsby, in 1891:

Looking at Bacon births in Louth registration district, an Emma was registered 1867, John William and Sarah Ann were registered in 1872, Fred in 1874, Frances 1876, Kate 1878, George Edward 1879. I can't see Ada. The Grainsby baptisms don't seem to be available on FMP or Lincs to the Past, but I'm wondering whether the 1881 enumerator has got the children's details muddled up and missed Fred's name out.

I'm beginning to think that as well, Kate. Fred's birth was registered - or a Fred in that district.
