Anyone heard of (or know anything about) school exams before 1900?

I have an ancestor who was awarded a "Certificate of Education" in 1876. As he was in his mid teens, I assume this was a school leaving certificate. I can't find a thing on Google. I know there were school leaving exams before 1900 - I remember it coming up in an episode of Larkrise to Candleford on the telly!
