I have found my OH's 5x-grandparents, Joseph and Rebecca Newton, and the baptism of their son Thomas and other children.

One child is unaccounted for. He is John and leaves a will in 1787 and is buried at St Michael & All Angels, Heydour, Lincs.

The only possible marriage I can find so far for Joseph and Rebecca is this:
Field Value
County Nottinghamshire
Place Lenton
Church name St Anthony( Priory )
Register type Unspecified
Marriage date 6 Sep 1718
Groom forename Joseph
Groom surname NEWTON
Groom age 30
Groom parish Long Eaton co Derby (1.4 miles to Toton)
Groom occupation Husbandman
Bride forename Rebecca
Bride surname BURTON
Bride age 28
Bride parish Toton
Register note By Licence

I thought it might be them, then discounted it, and now I have found this baptism:

Name: John Newton
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 20 Nov 1718
Christening Place: SAWLEY AND LONG EATON,DERBY,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Joseph Newton
Mother's Name: Rebecca
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C09636-1
System Origin: England-ODM
GS Film number: 428936
Reference ID:

Unfortunately I can't find images for the parish on Family Search or anywhere else.

So, is this John and this marriage of Joseph and Rebecca Newton our family?
Thoughts on this much appreciated!

Have you found a burial for Rebecca, Elizabeth, and if so, does it give her age at death to check against the marriage?

No age for the burial, unfortunately, Kate.

County Lincolnshire
Place Heydour
Church name St Michael
Register type Unspecified
Burial date 17 May 1775
Burial person forename Rebecca
Burial person surname NEWTON
Witness
Witness
Register note Widow

This is actually incorrect. The entries in the register are out of order and the year is 1773.

If I get the chance next week I will go and have a look at the marriage entry in the PR's to see whether there is any more info. I'm wondering whether Rebecca was a widow when she married Joseph as 28 was a bit old for a woman's first marriage in those days.

That's very kind of you, Kate. They married by Licence, but I don't know if the allegation has survived. If they are the correct couple, they married on 6th September 1718 and John the son was baptised on 20th November 1718! Hence the need for a licence and a marriage away from home.

I stumbled across them by chance when I saw three probate entries for the Prebendary of Heydour.

Ancestry has abstracts of Notts marriage licences.

Joseph and Rebecca were bachelor and spinster respectively.

There's a promising baptism for Rebecca in Sawley & Long Eaton in 1688, parents William and Alice.

The bondsman named in the marriage licence is Henry Burton, presumably a relative of hers.

If you search for wills for Sawley/Long Eaton people, bear in mind that Derbyshire came under the Lichfield diocese, and they're online.

Mary, many thanks! I don't have much experience of Nottinghamshire research.

Hmm, all the Long Eaton and Sawley wills given on FMP are for the 1800s. There aren't any earlier ones.

I'm not sure when John Newton was born. The marriage licence for him and his wife Judith confuses matters as it states he was 30, but they probably mean 30 and over. If he had been born in 1718 he would have been 60!

His father died in 1742 so he couldn't have been born in 1748 anyway!

John was buried in 1787 and his will was proved then. His daughter with Judith, Rebecca, was baptised in 1779 and died in 1781. I can't find the image for his burial on FMP or Lincs to the Past, but FreeReg just states he was a farmer and gives no age.
