His parents owned and ran W.E. White & Son in Guildford in Guildford High Street. They also had the shop in Chertsey, where Herbert was for a while.

As a child, Herbert was sent to school in France. I don't know how long he was there - but we have a photo my Mum said was taken in France and he is wearing a type of uniform.

Buried in Highgate Cemetery on 15th March 1902. His wife Ada (cremated) and her sister Mary Dickens Purkis (nee Quintrell) were later buried there too. (Mary's husband had died in South Africa in WWI)
