My 5x great Aunt, Annie Ayre Davenport married James Little in Owen Sound, Canada in November 1868.

This is the transcript of the record that I have:

Estimated birth year: abt 1841
Father Name: John
Mother Name: Sarah An
Spouse Name: James Little
Spouse's Age: 26
Spouse Birth Place: Canada
Spouse residence: Owen Sound
Spouse Father Name: James
Spouse Mother Name: Caroline
Marriage Date: 26 Nov 1868
Marriage Location: Owen Sound

Archives of Ontario Microfilm: MS248_7
Source: Indexed by: Genealogical Research Library

She died in January 1869 and is buried in the cemetery in Owen Sound and I have a photograph of her gravestone.

I wondered if anyone was able to help me find anything more about her or her husband? She witnessed her brother's wedding in May 1867, so must have gone to Canada after that. At this time (in Canada), would she have had a death certificate? Would they have married in a Church or how would I find out?

I am hoping to tie in a visit to her grave (!) with a visit to Canada later in the year, so knowing anything more that I could would be very helpful.

I know all about her background and life in England. She was born 28th January 1841 in Coleorton, Leicestershire (near Ashby De La Zouch). Her parents were John Davenport and Sarah Ann (formerly Stinson). Her maternal grandmother was Ann Ayre at birth, so she was named after her.

Thanks for looking.

The Archives of Ontario "Pathfinder to Death Registrations" says that civil registration began in Ontario on the 1st July 1869, so neither the marriage nor her death will have been registered under civil registration.

You could try contacting the local Owen Sound Library to see what they have, or even the Ontario Genealogical Society. From local experience, there are often records of early residents.

There is a gravestone in the same cemetary where Annie is buried for James Little (1812 - 1871) and his wife Caroline Owen (1813 - 1854). Could these be James' parents?

The 1871 census of Owen Sound shows a James H Little (Annie's widower?) as being a printer, born in England of Irish descent. His religion is Wesleyan Methodist.
Also at the address are Mary Little (26), Maria Little (24) and John Little (23). No relationships are shown.
