I have accounted for Isabella Reilly, who married James Taylor in 1863. Also I have Ellen who married Henry Bainbridge Atkinson in 1858.

The mother Helen/Ellen died in 1866:
Deaths Sep 1866
REILLY Helen 59
Birkenhead

The same year Thomas is found in crew lists:

Name: Thomas Reilly
Age: 18
Birth Year: abt 1848
Birth Place: Birkenhead
Event Date: 21 Aug 1866
Port of Registry: Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Ship Name: City of Limerick
Official Number: 22938
Reference Number: 387CRE/215

After 1866 I lose sight of the rest of the family, except probably John, who in 1891 is living in Birkenhead, single and a broker (agent).

I don't know what happen to Robert or the rest of the family.

They were RC.

Thanks, Allan. I have used that site once or twice before. I'll have a look, but as they were in Birkenhead so far they aren't turning up in Liverpool except for Isabella's baptism.

I presume that in 1863 when Isabella gets married , the family are still in Birkenhead ? the marriage was in Birkenhead - Civil Marriage or Registrar attended
Many people went from the Wirral went to Liverpool to get married - it was a Ferry ride across the Mersey and a "day out" - so I wouldn't dismiss any of the children marrying in Liverpool ..:)

added - in case you don't have it
Also I have Ellen who married Henry Bainbridge Atkinson in 1858.- they married in St John church , Egremont

It's a shame the marriage information doesn't give the names of the fathers of the bride and groom, as it's impossible to tell otherwise!

Thanks, Allan. I have no problem with the Atkinsons - the Taylors and Atkinsons were quite close and they were godparents for some of each others' children.

Wow, that's interesting, Kate. I've never seen him with the name Michael before. If that it them they certainly got around - Ireland, Scotland, Wales, back to Ireland for a birth, Liverpool and then Birkenhead!

I would have expected them to have had an RC marriage. Perhaps Helen was born a Protestant.

They wouldn't have been able to have a Catholic marriage in England and Wales at that time, though, would they?

I think the Liverpool connection is muddying the waters for me!

"About Liverpool, England, Catholic Marriages, 1754-1921

While the majority of the marriages recorded in this database come from the period after a new Catholic diocese was established in Liverpool in 1850, some extend back into the 18th century, when Catholicism still operated under legal sanctions in England. The 1559 Act of Uniformity had made the Church of England the official state church, and until the Catholic Relief Act passed in 1829, Roman Catholics faced varying degrees of legal discrimination. For this reason, registers of Catholic ordinances, like the ordinances themselves, were sometimes kept secret, and sometimes ordinances weren’t recorded at all.

In spite of this, thousands of Catholic registers exist, and parish records—whether Catholic or Protestant—are the best sources of vital record information before civil registration began in England in 1837 and remain an important source thereafter. Liverpool itself has historically been home to one the largest Catholic populations in England."

Thanks, Kate.

Isabella Reilly's godparents were Thomas and Ann McGlue (lovely name!).

Here they are on the 1851 Census:

Thomas McGlue is a gardener, as was Robert Reilly.

I wonder if they are related to the Reillys. I can't find a marriage for Thomas and Ann.
