My only sighting of John Taylor is here:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=lES203&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&gsfn=John&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Taylor&gsln_x=0&msbdy=1784&msbpn__ftp=Liverpool,%20Lancashire,%20England&msbpn=92187&msbpn_PInfo=8-|0|0|3257|3251|0|0|0|5271|92187|0|&mscng=John&cp=0&MSAV=1&uidh=ho3&pcat=35&h=8841824&db=uki1861&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1

Apart from the baptism of his son John Taylor, probably in 1814 at St Mary's, Liverpool. John's sponsors were Thomas and Elizabeth Taylor.

I'm struggling to find him elsewhere. In 1861 he was a Customs Weigher Machine, but it is likely he had a different occupation as a younger man.

What are the details on his son's marriage cert, please, Elizabeth?

Other children of John and Mary Taylor baptised at St Mary's, Liverpool, around that time include:
Thomas 1808, sponsors John Smith and Ann Farrar
Elizabeth 1811 sponsors Daniel and Elizabeth Taylor
Ann 1815 sponsors John Taylor and Helen Smith
Joseph 1817 sponsors Thos Taylor and Alice Smith
William 1819 sponsors Robert and Ann Molineux
James 1822 sponsors John Smith and Hannah Ainsworth.

So the parents' marriage could be this one:

Ooh, thanks, Kate, you have been busy whilst I've been doing domestic duties!

It looks promising. My head has been whirling with this family, and I needed a fresh pair of eyes. I'll investigate what you have found and then come back to the thread.

I have found I had made a note of this family some time ago when I first researched them, but didn't have as much information as now.

Name: John Taylor
Age: 79
Burial Date: 13 Nov 1864
Parish: Ford Cemetery
of Ford

Liverpool Mercury
Saturday November 19, 1864
"Taylor – Nov. 9, at his residence, Sefton, near Ford, in his 80th year, Mr John Taylor, late planemaker of this town."

Also, a lot of the family lived in Cumberland Street, so it looks even better!

Watch making or watch case making seemed to be a family occupation, too.

In the St James, Walton on the Hill one (or St James, Toxteth Park, according to Ancestry) they are married by John Smith, with witnesses William Filburn and Hannah Filburn. The St Nicholas one says they were married by John Maddox, witnesses William and Hannah Philbin. So it looks as though they went through two ceremonies, one C of E and one Roman Catholic.

Thanks, Elizabeth, but I was thinking in particular of John Taylor jr's residence on the marriage cert (if it doesn't just say "Liverpool" or something) and his father's occupation. But neither of those links shows that information, but of course he married before 1837 which I didn't realise.
