View Full Version : Filling in the gaps
I've been looking for James Embleton's first marriage (he was a widower when he married at St George Hanover Square in 1815) - TOGG thread here: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=7226&highlight=james+embleton
I know James was born c. 1766 not in Middlesex, and he was a servant/steward.
There's a marriage at Embleton, Northumberland which is a good fit for various reasons - 12 July 1790, James Embleton and Elizabeth Dodds. Children I've found from this marriage, all bap. at Ellingham, Northumberland, are:
Edward (1790-1791)
Hannah (b. 1793)
John (b. and d. 1797)
Elizabeth (b. 1801)
James (b. 1803)
There are marriages at St George Hanover Square for Hannah (1819) and James junior (1829).
The loose ends I haven't managed to tie up, if anyone fancies looking, are:
1. when and where did Elizabeth, the first Mrs Embleton, die?
2. what happened to Elizabeth junior? I can't find a marriage or burial
3. At the marriage of James junior in 1829 one of the witnesses is a Jane Embleton - could she be another child of this marriage?
I haven't really got around to working out how common the name Embleton is yet, but there's this burial:
Elizth Embleton Burial 20 Aug 1809 St Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex
and she was aged 43, making her the same age as James.
There's another burial at St Luke's Chelsea for a James Embleton aged 28 in 1831. Would that be the one who married a couple of years earlier?

Is that 1831, Merry?

This copy of the PR gives the address of that Elizabeth who was buried in 1809; I think it says Exeter Court:

And the address for the James who died in 1831 is Sloane Street.
Is that 1831, Merry?
Sorry, I've edited it now! Thanks.

There is an Elizabeth Embleton, spinster, who marries a David Morgan Davis 26 Dec 1823 at St Botolph without Bishopsgate, but no Embleton witnesses:

Yes, that's James junior - born 1803.
I'd wondered about the Elizabeth buried at St Lukes in 1809. So far I haven't found a likely baptism for Elizabeth Dodds, but that burial has to be a possible.
Adding this here so I don't forget it. I've found another possible marriage for daughter Elizabeth - 16 Jan 1833 St George Hanover Square, Elizabeth Embleton to Joseph Bond, both otp. Witnesses Mary Ann Embleton, David (Tuppence? Trussen?), William Bond.
If it's the right person, she'd be 32 and Mary Ann Embleton could be either her stepmother or her half-sister. I haven't found Joseph and Elizabeth Bond in 1841 to check her age.
Further to the above, and looking for James's possible daughter Jane Embleton, I found this Northumberland baptism on Freereg. The only problem is the father's name is Robert not James. Other than that, place, date, mother's name and position in family all fit.
1 Sept 1805 born 23 July 1805 Holy Trinity Embleton. Father Robert, mother Elizabeth Dodds, 3rd daughter, father: native of this parish, mother: native of this parish.
FamilySearch also have Robert as the father, but possibly the vicar made a mistake? There are other baptisms for children of Robert Embleton before and after, but none with mother Elizabeth Dodds.
Jane's only appearance in the records is as a witness at the marriage of (possible) brother James in 1829 at St George Hanover Square. I'd like to confirm she belonged by finding some other reference to her, but I can't find a marriage, death or any census entry.
Can anyone spot her anywhere?

There is a Jane Embleton who marries Thomas Smith 24 May 1835 at Embleton and I assume this is them on the 1851 census:

Jane is down as age 43, born at Embleton, Northumberland. I don't see another Jane Embleton baptised at Embleton around the right time on FamilySearch.
Thanks for looking.
FreeReg have another baptism from Embleton BTs - 25 Nov 1804 Jane Embleton, parents John Embleton and Elizabeth Wade, who could also be a candidate for that marriage.
The witnesses at the marriage were Isabel Embleton and John Morton which are not names I recognise.
I'll have to keep looking to prove it either way.

The 1804 Jane died in 1807, according to FamilySearch, so I had ruled her out.
Ah, right, I missed that. thanks.
