Help can anyone find a birth for this lady supposedly c1878 in Low Fell, Gateshead, Co Durham

She married in Jul qtr 1899 to a John Coulson Smith in Gateshead, Co Durham.

In the 1901 census she is here with her husband, Anna as opposed to Hannah, there's a brother in law William ? Cook bc1871 (transcribed c1881) in Low Fell , and nephew William Anderson aged 3 born Birtley, Co Durham.

Because both Anna/Hannah and William were both born in Low Fell I wonder if they are brother and sister - in which case where does the name Easten come from?

1911 census - in North Shields, Co Durham

just John C Smith
Hannah Smith - still saying born Low Fell
and their 2 sons.

Any help much appreciated.

Don't forget that "brother-in-law" sometimes means "step-brother".

Thanks Kite, that does look like a connection but how I don't know.

I've been struggling to find a link to Hannah though. In the 1901 census William Cook has an initial but its been transcribed as an L but I'm not sure.

kiterunner

I was trying to figure that middle initial out earlier and I did think it looked most like an L. I tried to find his army records and I did find a William Cook or Cooke born about the right time who joined the Durham Light Infantry, father was George Cook(e) of Gateshead but I got nowhere trying to find the family and link them with the name Easten! And since that William didn't have a middle name, maybe not the right person anyway.

All I can think of is getting John and Hannah's marriage cert, sorry.

Thanks Kite - your help much appreciated.

Probably have to get the marriage certificate but will have to wait awhile - hopefully one of the aussies might have got it already - am waiting for a reply on ancestry.

What about these?

Marriages Mar 1865

Brown Susan Tynemouth 10b 319 <<<<<<<<<<<<
Cook William Easton Tynemouth 10b 319 <<<<<<<<<<
Cooke William Easton Tynemouth 10b 319 <<<<<<<<<<<
Hunter Joseph Tynemouth 10b 319
Moore Margaret Ann Tynemouth 10b 319

Then 1871:

William E Cooke 38
Susan Cooke 28
Thomas Cooke 5
John B Cooke 4
Edith Cooke 3 Months

1881 - can't find them....

1891:

William Cooke 58
Susan Cooke 48
John Cooke 24
James Cooke 18
Edith Cooke 15
Hannah Cooke 13 <<<<<<<<
Robert Cooke 10

I just feel if I could find the 1881 census there would be a William b 1871!

Sorry, I forgot to point out the William Cook I listed above is the same age and birthplace as the William Easton Kate found (Newcastle abt 1833).

Oooh, I thought the L was actually an R in 1901 and I see he is Wm Richard Cook!

Merry
07-04-16, 15:33
Although Wm and Susan used the surname Cook after their marriage, when they died the deaths were registered as Easten:

Deaths Sep 1899

Easten Susan 57 Gateshead 10a 639
Easten William 67 Gateshead 10a 635

Merry

Without Wm Easten's marriage cert we don't know anything about his parents. I'm just wondering if there are two Wm Easten's b Newcastle about the same time, or one?

In 1851 there's the lodger Kate posted but there is also another the same age (I think) and birthplace who is the son of James and Margary Easten. Easiest way to find him is if you search for Margary Eastin (that spelling) on ancestry. His entry has been transcribed as aged 10 in 1851 but I think he's 18. Says he is a cabinet maker in 1851 (also his father's occ) but I did still wonder if this Wm is the same one as the lodger, just listed twice? I also wondered if Margery's maiden name might be Cook?!

I think there must be two, Merry, because the reason I never found William as Cook on the later censuses was that I found a William Easten the right age born Newcastle on those censuses and thought that was him. I think that one was actually living in Newcastle. My internet was going slow so I couldn't easily go back and check on the earlier censuses to see if there were two at that point.

Merry
07-04-16, 19:07
Oh, OK, so at least it could be important to know there may be two of them?!

Merry
08-04-16, 13:52
I noticed William Richard Cook/Easten b 1869 wasn't with his parents in 1871 and hoped he might be with a relative of his father. Turned out he is with his maternal grandmother, transcribed by ancestry as William R Caston!

Sorry have not been keeping up with all your hard work - was hoping to get a reply through ancestry but both of them are keeping quiet.

Might just have to bite the bullet even though it's only a distant twig and get the marriage certificate just for curiousity sake to find the name of the father at least and hopefully sort out the Easten and Cooke relationship.

Must thank you both though for persistence and yes there does seem to be at least 2 Hannah Easten's.

I think the other Hannah Easton Kate found and posted in #3 married Edward Trodden in 1902. They are together in 1911 in Newcastle (see link), and had two further children registered with the correct mmn. Hannah died in 1950 aged 68.
