My g-g grandfather was born in 1811 in Wellinborough, Northampton, married in London (St John the Evangalist, Waterloo) in 1834 to Eliza Martin and died in Camberwell Infirmary in 1877. According to a number of Ancestry.co.uk Public Trees he was the son of Thomas Taplin Cooke, circus entrepreneur, and Mary Ann Thorpe (or Chapman). Despite a number of messages to holders of these Public Trees no one has yet provided "evidence" of this connection - no parish records etc.

Can anyone help?

Assuming this biography's correct, Thomas Edwin Cooke, son of Thomas Taplin Cooke, is a different person from your Edwin:

FindmyPast has Northamptonshire parish records, but I haven't found a baptism so far for your Edwin, either in Wellingborough or elsewhere.

Thanks Mary. Yes my Edwin is not Thomas Edwin. Thomas Taplin is supposed to have had 19 children and they were born all round the British Isles. He had a circus so traveled about and his kids were born all over!

Should have mentioned I had been to the Northampton Records Office and been through all their Parish Records with no luck. My Edwin didn't go into the Circus business, he was a tallow merchant in and around Lambeth.
Cheers

FMP doesn't seem to have baptisms for Northamptonshire, unfortunately.

It's a shame that the marriage record doesn't help. No Cooke witnesses, unfortunately.

It's a shame no Cooke relatives are with them at any time.

The Northamptonshire parish registers are on ancestry, not FMP, but I can't see him in there.

Elizabeth, your link for the 1851 census takes me to the marriage record.

There is an Edwin, son of Mary Beal, baptised 11 Nov 1810 at Wellingborough. We need to see if we can rule him out (or in).

Thomas Taplin was married to Mary Ann Thorpe (or Chapman) so I doubt if Mary Beal's Edwin is the one

Sorry, I thought you said you didn't think your Edwin was the son of Thomas Taplin Cooke? Or have I misunderstood?

Ah! I see your point. There are so many saying that Thomas Taplin was the father that what I was asking for was the "evidence" ie a baptism record or such. I overlooked the possibility that Mary Beal's Edwin may have had a father with a surname Cooke. What I really want to know is who is his father and by what believable proof. Where do we go from here?

Edwin Beal, son of Mary Beal, was buried 27 Nov 1811, so we can rule him out.

I suppose we should look at all Thomas and Mary Ann's known children to see if we can find a connection between one of them and Edwin.
