George Hancock married Harriet Kettle in 1845 by licence and states that his father was Job Hancock, a Potter.

He was born c. 1823 at Wybunbury, Cheshire.
This is his baptism:

It states his mother was Mary Hancock and he was illegitimate. The BTs state the same.

Job Hancock and his wife Mary had a son called Thomas. He was baptised on 3rd November 1816 at Wybunbury. His parents had married at the beginning of the year by Licence.

In 1841 the two boys are together, both Coopers:

Both prospered. Their father Job had owned a pottery business with a partner but they went bankrupt in 1816. He died in 1834 - corrected!
So, I can't work out what happened here. Online trees give George's parents as Job and his wife Mary.

The same information is given here:

I have just found this, which states George was the son of Walter Hancock!

Now very confused.

I have George and Harriet on all censuses except 1816, when Harriet is with the children but no George.

If Job died in 1816 then he can't be George's father.

Where does it say that, please, Elizabeth?

Sorry - 1834!

Okay, that is more mysterious!

At the beginning of "The Foden Story" under 1842.

Do you know for sure that the George mentioned there is the same as your George, Elizabeth?

My best guess is that Job and Mary had separated and that A. N. Other fathered George, but we would need some evidence to prove whether Walter was A. N. Other or not!

It's rather confused. I'm going through all the censuses and following the children through. I think this will take more research and I will ask for more help when I've tried to unravel this further.

Thanks for your help, Kate.

I have looked at Walter Hancock of Stratford and he had just one daughter. He was very famous in his field and his life is well documented.
This information is incorrect about George being Walter Hancock's son.
