My 2g grandmother Julia Ann Walmsley was born according to her birth certificate on 20 October 1852. I asked for the copy of the register, not a hand written copy from Staffs RO.

Her baptism is on FMP and is recorded as 18 October 1852. I have double checked and it is the right year and date.

I'm leaning towards the birth cert being wrong.

Is there anything I can do to sort this out?

I can't find her on the 1939 census. Her married name was Simpson.

Putting it here so I don't forget:

There is a Julia A Simpson born 10/2/1849 Widow on the 1939 register.

I can't see the year being right as she has an older brother Joseph on the census born about 1850, but you never know.

What's the date the birth was registered? If you took the birth back a few days would the registration have been late? (over 42 days). Someone may have been avoiding paying a fine perhaps?

I see she had got a bit younger by the time she died.

Perhaps she was born 2 Oct and someone reversed the numbers when writing it down?!!

I have the baptism of a grandmother in 1876 but birth wasn't registered so wonder if the family were fined lol.

Was your Julia definitely still alive in 1939, Toni? There is a Julia A Simpson death Apr-Jun 1938 Manchester South, age 88.

In order to fine someone, you have to know they haven't registered a birth. It is unlikely that anyone would actually go to the registrar and say "I haven't registered a birth, fine me". Most people saw civil registration as a piece of needless bureaucracy back then and it was only in later years that the advantages became clear, such as when trying to get a pension or some other kind of benefit.

The birth was registered 25th November so no not close to a fine. Of course they may have made it up to be within the time frame.

Yes. It has taken me over 24 hours to find but I have her death certificate. She died in 1941 at 72 Wilmot Drive Cross Heath.

I tried searching that address but it didn't give a result.
