In this weeks Lost Cousin newsletter there is a snippet on the foundling hospital in London.

It seems that foundlings were given complete new identities. Could this be why we can't find a birth registration for Peter? Doesn't explain why we can't find him in 1891 and 1901 though.

I think it was just the Coram hospitals which gave new identities, but even so, they have very good records I understand, so if you can find your man there then you will at least know he was given a new identity! There might also be details of his birth identity.

It was just an idea OC. Googling, the did have a branch in Ackworth which is only 17 miles from Rotherham where Peter says he was born on the 1911 census. Trouble is, that closed about 100 years before he was born.
