Is he my 8x-great-grandfather?

Please see the information from the marriage allegation for Sarah Williams and James Barker:

There is more about him here:

He was Vicar of St Mildred, Poultry, London.

When Sarah Williams married James Barker the marriage allegation stated she was the daughter of [Doctor Williams] of St Mildred Poultry.

Ooh, was James Barker an Archdeacon? There is this Roger Williams' will which looks useful:

Thanks, Kate. Looks promising - one of James and Sarah Barker's sons was Roger. Also, James Barker was Vicar of Cocking in Sussex and an Archdeacon of Chichester.

Oh, wow! I have just seen the will! Many thanks.

I can't see a will for John Williams himself. He died in 1709.

No, I couldn't find one either, which is why I looked for Roger's instead.

Roger Williams' first wife Frances left a legacy to some of the Barker sons, it appears!

Off to look for the will again, but no success so far.

Whose will, John's or Frances's?

Thanks, Kate. For some reason I couldn't find it.

I have found lots of material on the Grestock family. Richard Grestock was very litigious.

Well, the wife of Roger Williams (Frances Jenkes) had a sister called Sarah Jenkes whose 1698 will mentions :

"my dear Mother Sarah the wife of the Right Reverend Lord Bishop of Chickester"

and

"my dear Sister Frances Jenkes".

So I have discovered that John Williams' first wife must have died and he then married Sarah Jenkes, widow, by licence:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&msT=1&gsfn=Sarah&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Jenkes&gsln_x=0&msgdy=1690&msgpn__ftp=London%2c+London%2c+England&msgpn=85535&msgpn_PInfo=8-|0|0|3257|3251|0|0|0|5274|85535|0|&cpxt=1&cp=4&MSAV=1&uidh=ho3&pcat=34&h=9887979&recoff=9+10&db=LMAearlyparish&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&msT=1&gsfn=Roger&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Williams&gsln_x=0&mssns=Jenkes&cpxt=1&cp=4&MSAV=1&uidh=ho3&pcat=34&h=476296&recoff=5+25&db=SurreyMarriage&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1
So Roger Williams married Frances Jenkes, his stepmother's daughter.

The Jenkes family came from Shropshire:

I think John Williams' first wife was Margaret. Her burial is here, and that of other family members:

Her granddaughter, Margaret Barker, was my 6x-grandmother.

We have been down in Chichester. We visited the cathedral but although they were very helpful they didn't have to hand any more information than I already had.

However, I have traced some of the children.

I have found my photos of some information that they showed me in the Cathedral and it mentions an administration in Jan. 1710 PRO, PROB 6/86, fol. 7v

(as mentioned on my other thread)
