The transcription in the 1939 register says "Fireman Upholsterer"

Do you think that is right?
Thanks

I think it's more likely to be Foreman than Fireman Joan.

Yes, Foreman :)
Alternatively, he might be an upholsterer, but also have skills as a fireman - which might prove useful. I'm sure I read that they asked for useful skills as well as the trade you were actually engaged in.

Thank you Heather and Phoenix :)

I think the person in question was female (Emma). I don't know whether there were female fire-fighters in 1939
And I guess "foreman" would be used regardless of the person's sex

LOL :)
I seem to have so many queries in the 1939 register - it's making me quite dizzy :d

Hi Merry
On that particular record, there are nine people (all open) and I have queries on 8 of them!
Now I see I can have the record put on to a mug or tea towel
