I just saw a post on Facebook which said the number of open records has increased from 27 million to 30 million. I searched for my uncle whose record had been closed, (he was born in 1934 and died in 1999) and his record is open now. I didn't apply for it to be opened though I suppose it's possible that someone else did, but maybe they have been allowed to open records on the strength of matches against the GRO death index, as has been suggested on Facebook. Anyway, definitely worth another look if there are people you haven't found yet.

Interesting. I just checked with a free search, and the younger of my mum's two cousins (brothers) who died in 1983 (?) is now on there, but the elder who died in 1946 still isn't. Still, at least they've added one.

A few more from my other trees seem to have been added, too.

Hopefully they keep updating this reguarly!

My father's has been opened too! With his parents at Farnham. The enumerator was challenged by the spelling of "veterinary".

The transcriber had even more of a problem - "Vet Nary Student E Yard" instead of "Vetenery (sic) Student 2nd year"

My uncle Les's has been opened too on the image but is still showing as closed on the transcription. He was unmarried, born 1920 and died 1978. I'm the only one on that side of the family doing the family tree I know that for certain as I'm sometimes asked things by cousins. I didn't have his death certificate so that's why I didn't apply for it to be opened. His should never have been closed anyway with him dying in 1978.

I did ask about him on an earlier thread on here and we debated if it was because he had died before pension age that his death had not been picked up.

Doesn't explain why it's still closed in the transcription though unless they are hoping that some unsuspecting person will pay to unlock it.

Most of the people I looked at who were closed in error before and should be open are still closed. I can understand why deaths before dobs were included in the death registrations might still be closed, but that doesn't explain why so many others are apparently still closed who died in England/Wales after 1969. I say 'apparently' as we can't be sure who is hiding under the black lines, only make educated guesses.

FMP have confirmed on Facebook that they were able to open some records by matching against the GRO indexes.

Ooh, I'd forgotten about this, and my mum's showing now.

Her married name's been inserted and alongside her name they've put what looks like RG A 7-945, with an M under the A. Any idea what it means? She was actually married in June 1945.

I wonder whether the date is the date that she notified them to change her name in the records?
