I'm looking in vain for a marriage between a Thomas Shapman and Sarah. Her maiden name was Ayling. I can't find it in Hampshire from the FHS CD.

I have her husband's name from the will of Sarah's father, which was written on 3rd October 1722 at Bentley, Hampshire, three days before his death.

At the time the will was written Thomas and Sarah Shapman had three children, Sarah, Thomas and Mary.

The Aylings had connections with Sussex, so the marriage could have taken place there.

While you are looking, would you look for any Pulling/Poling/Poulden marriages in the Petersfield area? I have a large number of missing marriages for a similar period, with a possible retreat into Sussex. I don't know enough about the area to speculate whether there were lax vicars, lax morals, or a few fires which took the registers with them.

No sign of an Ayling- Shapman marriage in Sussex either. Out of curiosity I checked for baptisms, and there were none for Shapman in Hampshire at that time, but Thomas and Sarah Chapman of Hartley Mauditt (about 6 miles from Bentley) had Sarah (3 May 1715), Thomas (22 Jan 1716) and John (19 Dec 1718). No sign of Mary. Checked for Chapman-Ayling marriages, but again there were none in either county.

Not much help I'm afraid

Quite a number for Pullinger, none for Pulling , a few for Poling.

Roger Poling 8/5/1681 to Mary Sheryer
Rodger Poling 22/4/1683 to Elizabeth Heb
Roger Poling 4/9/1688 to Margaret Young all in Petersfield.

Elenor Poling 31/10/1708 to Richard Utley
Mary Poling 2/4/11727 to Lewis Ayling (!) again both in Petersfield

Only other one was William Poling 19/1/1717 to Elizabeth Hoare in Catherington.

Finally 2 for Poulden

Mary Poulden 30/12/1721 to James Garret at Portsmouth St Thomas
Sarah Poulden 18/1/1726 to Kilbury Garret at Alverstoke

Well done Phoenix - makes sense, Farnham is only a hop skip and a jump away from Bentley.

Oooh, Phoenix, many thanks!!

It is the Bermuda triangle of Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. I never know where to look.

Just realised the marriage entry says Thomas is from Hartley, so those baptisms are quite possibly theirs.

Thanks for looking, Crawfie!

I have a gut feeling that that William Poling ought to be connected as another William (son of Thomas of Petersfield) was apprenticed in Catherington some twenty years later, but no proof. Elenor and Mary are both distant aunts.

I have four generations of Polings, and not a single marriage between them :o

Well, now that's sorted I could add my list of missing marriages.....and births....and lol

Well done though. Great to get a breakthrough.

Crawfie, thanks for the baptisms. I seem to have mislaid my Hampshire baptism CD for the period, but I'm sure it will turn up soon!

I wrote the above yesterday and it seems I forgot to push the send button!!

Many thanks for the help on this.

Libby, you should post them up (on another thread, maybe). I was going through my list of "unknowns" the other day and managed to fill quite a few in.

*Coughs*

I'm asking for help again for the marriage of Sarah Ayling's father.

A marriage between Thomas Ayling and Sarah ?, probably Sussex or Surrey, not in Hampshire because I have checked. I am searching between the dates of 1675 to 1690, but probably by 1684.

The theory is that they lived in Frensham before going to Bentley, and there are these baptisms at Frensham:

Sarah 19 Feb 1683
John 9 Oct 1686
Thomas 3 Apr 1689

Wills or manorial records are probably more helpful in that period.

Can't find anything in Sussex that fits the bill.

Presumably you have Sarah's will?

Oooh, thanks for that, Crawfie! I didn't have it but I do have her husband's and her son's, which are PCC wills.

This is the will of Thomas Ayling from Empshott in Hampshire from 1676. I haven't been through it completely, but it mentions his son Thomas who lives in Frensham. Possibly the father?
