Robert Adolphus Hodder (Haddon on Ancestry’s PRs) married Lucy Rouse (b1830 Oxford) on 20 Dec 1851 at St Paul, Deptford. Going by the fact that he was a police sergeant at time of marriage, it’s likely he is the Robert Hodder, police constable, born 1825 Burton upon Trent, in Camberwell in 1851.
Lucy Rouse was born c1830 Oxfordshire.
A son, Robert William Rouse, was born 13 Sept 1852, baptised St George, Camberwell 6 Oct 1852. Address Albany Road.
A policeman Robert Hodder gave evidence in 1853 and 1854 in Old Bailey Online.
A Robert Adolphus Hodder, aged 58 and born England, died at South Street, St Louis Missouri 16 July 1884. (from newspaper)
From Family Search:
1870 Robert's wife is Cordelia born 1843/44 Missouri.(assumed, no relationships shown)
1880 Robert's wife is Alice, born 1849 New York (marriage 1874 Missouri)
Two children, Jane, 1859/60 and Lucy, 1862, were born in Tennessee. Josephine, 1863, was born Iowa and the rest were born in Missouri.
Lucy Rouse is my person of interest. I can't find any trace of her after the 1852 birth of her son in Camberwell. The eldest daughter, Lucy, is not present on the 1870 Missouri census, but is on the 1880.

Isn't the eldest dau Jane? Just checking which one is missing in 1870.

Oops - sorry Merry, I think you're right! I'll just nip back to FS and check. Two slightly different transcripts came up for 1880 when I put Lucy's name in the search.
Edit - yes, apologies. Jane is the eldest and she is missing on the 1880.
This looks like Roberts Civil War call up in 1863

Thanks Julie! That confirms his move from Iowa to Missouri as 1863. Edit: assuming Josephine's year of birth is accurate.
I only have Ancestry UK.
Would it be possible for you to look at the marriage of the Lucy Martha Hodder to Charles Winckel in the Missouri Marriage Records 1805 to 2002 to see if it gives details of her parents please?
Unfortunately no mention of parents.

Thanks Julie!
I'm glad I don't have to do much Missouri research if their marriage certs don't have parent details!
Haven't had any success with Lucy or her son.

Thank you so much Julie - hope I get the chance to wade through so many pages for you some day!

Kate, I don't have any information about the family between the English ones I mentioned in the opening post and Robert's reappearance in 1870.
Lucy Rouse and the first child don't appear in any English death records and I've no idea if there were other wives after Lucy and before Cordelia.
Perhaps they died enroute to the US.

If the birth records for the children born in Tennessee aren't online then it could be that Lucy sr and Robert jr died in Tennessee and their death records aren't online either.

Statewide Tennessee births and deaths didn't start till 1906.
The biggest gap between children is between Alice and Jenette. There might also have been other children before Jane b59/60, but they would have been young enough that I'd have expected them to be with parents still in 1870. Lucy wasn't however and she was only 8 in 1870.
