Hi all,

I am trying to find a birth registration for a Beatrice Taylor, born c1865 in either Norfolk or Suffolk.

I've found her marriage certificate (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gss=angs-c&new=1&rank=1&gsfn=Beatrice&gsfn_x=0&gsln=Taylor&gsln_x=1&msbdy=1865&msfng=James&msfns=Taylor&mssng0=Ernest&mssns0=Ling&cpxt=1&cp=11&MSAV=1&uidh=yke&pcat=34&h=5365745&recoff=9+10+31+32+44+45&db=LMAmarriages&indiv=1&ml_rpos=1) to George Ernest Ling, on which she is 24 years old. I've also got census records for 1871 to 1911, both as Taylor and then Ling. Her parents were James and Naomi Taylor.

Her place of birth differs between census records... at first it's Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk and then by 1911 she's put Winfarthing, Norfolk.

There's a Jan 1863 birth record for a Beatrice Taylor in Norwich, but I don't think that's her, and I think I've found that woman elsewhere anyway.

Can anyone please help me find a birth record for Beatrice? I'm probably missing something obvious. I think this (http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=try&db=ONSDeath93&h=21391154) is her death registration.

FreeReg has this:

Field Value
County Norfolk
Place Shelfanger
Church name All Saints
Register type TR
Register entry number 571
Baptism date 24 Oct 1864
Person forename Beatrice
Person sex ?
Father forename James
Father surname TAYLOR
Father occupation Gipsy
Mother forename Naomi

As it was a gipsy family perhaps they didn't bother with a birth registration.

Very interesting, I had no idea they were gypsies.

That's surely her, though, because I did find a public family tree on Ancestry with the same family on, and Selena was the name of one of her sisters.

I hope this link for the image of Selina's christening works:

Registration wasn't compulsory till 1875.

(Well, it WAS compulsory, but it was down to the Registrar to chase up births, not the responsibility of the parents to register the child). As they were a gypsy family, they probably didn't come to the notice of the registrar before they moved on.

OOOH! Look at this:

I must say some of it doesn't make much sense!

This is fantastic information. Thanks a lot. :)

I might need some more Ling help soon, though!
